The OSU Wrestling coaches believe the wrestler in the top position should look to score back points or a pin as quickly as possible. To begin to achieve this goal, Branch demonstrates several breakdowns, including the spiral ride, the tight-waist chop, and the tight-waist ankle breakdown. Placing emphasis on shifting an opponent's weight off his hips, Branch teaches techniques for applying hip pressure and keeping proper head position. He then demonstrates several of his most effective tilts including a series of bar arm tilts, scissor-locks on the ankle, simple turks, power-half combinations, and near and far-side cradles. Kerry McCoy provides an in-depth look at the top position, presenting a number of tips and techniques that will help your wrestler stop his opponent's explosion from the bottom. McCoy begins with a look at the proper technique to use when breaking down an opponent. He passes along three secrets that your wrestler can use to get an advantage over his opponent before the whistle even blows! From there he moves into scoring from the top, starting with a tilt series. This series features five different tilts your wrestler can use based on what his opponent does or how much time is left. McCoy always looks to score with a tilt first, but if he can't he flows into a leg series or bar arm series. He shows a number of different scoring variations to use from these two series. This video features Mitch Clark, Ohio State University Assistant Coach, NCAA Champion, 2X All-American. Mitch Clark became the first wrestler ever to win a NCAA championship by technical fall. In this video he combines drills with technique to show how to dominate from the top position. Clark begins with a brief overview of the spiral breakdown, passing along tips on how he has tweaked the move. From there he covers four different pinning series: Figure Four, Power Half, Tight Waist and Wrist Half (Clark's specialty). Each series is thoroughly explained and demonstrated. To be a well-rounded wrestler you must be able to escape from the bottom position. Munoz presents good look at the basic fundamentals of escaping from the bottom position. He begins with a brief look at positioning and then goes right into stand-ups. He covers three standups: Inside leg, outside leg and tripod (which is very effective for heavier wrestlers). This video features Russ Hellickson, Head Coach Ohio State University (2002 NWCA Coach of the Year, 2X Big Ten Coach of the Year), and Ken Ramsey, Ohio State University Assistant Coach (2X All American). To be effective in wrestling you have to have a sound base. With this in mind, Coach Helickson presents a number of drill situations to get your wrestlers stronger from the bottom position. From here, Helickson goes through a number of drills emphasizing the stand-up, wrist control and hip heist. As defense is a critical part of the sport, Helickson demonstrates counter drills for high and low leg attacks. As wrestlers become more sophisticated, the most effective way to get out of the bottom position is from the stand-up. Branch demonstrates the most successful stand-up escapes used by the OSU wrestling team, beginning with the stand-up technique to counter the most common offenses from the top position (spiral rides, under-hooks, 2-on-1 control, and ankle control). Branch then demonstrates several rolls to escape or get a reversal. Also included is instruction on methods for getting out of the flat position as well as several methods for fighting a top man with one or both legs in. Dennis Hall has had great success in the Greco-Roman wrestling over the past 10 years. A key to his success has been the Over-Under and the throws he has been able to hit from the Over-Under; in this video he passes along some of the secrets of this set-up. He begins with a brief explanation of the Over-Under, followed by the key elements of the position. From there he breaks down six different moves from the Over-Under including: Lat Pull, Arm and Shoulder Throw, Inside Trip, Hip Toss, Wrap Throw, and his favorite, the Lateral. Included are breakdowns, including spiral ride and chops, and how to flow on top to keep your opponent off-guard. Bar arm technique includes getting the arm out, getting your opponent to his back, and what to do if you can't get the arm out. In the bottom position, Coach Smith has had great success with the stand-up. He demonstrates his stand-up technique, and also demonstrates how the OSU Cowboys practice this technique. (42 minutes)

This video features Tom Ryan, Head Coach Hofstra University, 2X All-American at the University of Iowa. This tape is loaded with more than 15 drills from the takedown position to work on maintaining good body position. Ryan focuses on both the offensive and defensive side of five areas: Passing elbow, preventing under hooks, preventing front headlocks, keeping your center of gravity underneath you, and creating angles. The unique aspect of the tape is that Ryan demonstrates the drills using two sets of drill groups, a pair of lower weights and a pair of upper weights.
