2011 New York Mets Top 15 Prospects Post Season Report Card

With the 2011 minor league season complete we check in on the progress of each of the New York Mets preseason Top 15 prospects as ranked by our prospect ranker J.P. Schwartz. The post season grading report was done by the publisher of Top Prospect Alert, not Mr. Schwartz, and reflects only the 2011 season and not future upside or downside of the individual prospect. Our 2012 preseason rankings will be published in the coming months.

#1 Jenrry Mejia NO GRADE
Mejia’s season lasted just five starts before season ending Tommy John Surgery. When he was on the mound, Mejia went 1-2 with a 2.86ERA in 28.1 innings for the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons.

#2 Wilmer Flores GRADE: B
Flores batted .269 with 26 Doubles, 2 Triples, 9 Home Runs and 81 RBI’s for the High-A St. Lucie Mets. He walked 27 times and struck out 68 times in 133 games.

#3 Matt Harvey GRADE: A
Harvey went a combined 13-5 with a 3.32ERA between High-A St. Lucie and the Double-A Binghamton Mets. He walked 47 and struck out 156 in 135.2 innings. Opposing batters hit .246 off Harvey on the season.

#4 Kirk Nieuwenhuis GRADE: C+
Nieuwenhuis batted .298 with 17 Doubles, 2 Triples, 6 Home Runs and 14 RBI’s in 59 games at Triple-A Buffalo before tearing the labrum in his non throwing shoulder and missing the remainder of the 2011 season. The grade is reflective of his work prior to the injury. UPDATE: I have been asked by a few about the C+ grade for Nieuwenhuis. The biggest reason I gave Nieuwenhuis a C+ and not something higher is due to his lack of production with runners in scoring position. Yes he batted .298 and showed some power but he had 14 RBI’s in 53 games. 6 of those were himself on home runs (all of which were solo shots). He batted .206 with runners in scoring position and .228 with runners on. Any way you cut it, that’s just not getting the job done. Also 18 of his 25 extra base hits were with no one on. While he has improved his walk rate, he still strikes out once every 3.18 at-bats or more than once a game. That equals a C+ year for me.

#5 Fernando Martinez GRADE: C+
Martinez batted .260 with 11 Doubles, 8 Home Runs and 30 RBI’s for Triple-A Buffalo. He walked 18 times and struck out 60 times in 63 games. In 11 big league games with the Mets, Martinez batted .227 with 2 Doubles, 1 Home Run and 2 RBI’s.

#6 Erik Goeddel GRADE: B+
Goeddel went a combined 3-5 with a 3.24ERA between the Rookie League GCL Mets and the Low-A Savannah Sand Gnats. He walked 24 and struck out 69 batters in 77.2 innings. Opposing batters hit just .220 off Goeddel on the year.

#7 Matt den Dekker GRADE: B+
Den Dekker batted a combined .265 with 32 Doubles, 11 Triples, 17 Home Runs, 68 RBI’s between High-A St. Lucie and Double-A Binghamton. He also added 24 stolen bases on the season. Den Dekker walked 51 times and struck out 156 times in 139 games.

#8 Cory Vaughn GRADE: B-
Vaughn batted a combined .255 with 22 Doubles, 3 Triples, 13 Home Runs and 59 RBI’s between Low-A Savannah and High-A St. Lucie. He walked 59 times and struck out 117 times in 131 games.

#9 Juan Urbina GRADE: C
Urbina went 4-6 with a 5.95ERA for the Rookie League Kingsport Mets. He walked 20 and struck out 49 in 56 innings. Opposing batters hit .300 off Urbina on the year.

#10 Cesar Puello GRADE: B-
Puello batted .259 with 21 Doubles, 5 Triples, 10 Home Runs, and 50 RBI’s for High-A St. Lucie. He also stole 19 bases. He walked 18 times and struck out 103 times in 117 games.

#11 Lucas Duda GRADE: A
Duda batted .292 with 21 Doubles, 3 Triples, 10 Home Runs and 50 RBI’s in 100 big league games with the Mets. He walked 33 times and struck out 57 times in his big league action. At Triple-A Buffalo, Duda batted .302 with 8 Doubles, 10 Home Runs, and 24 RBI’s in 38 games.

#12 Darrell Ceciliani GRADE: B-
Ceciliani batted .259 with 23 Doubles, 4 Triples, 4 Home Runs, and 40 RBI’s. He stole 25 bases. Ceciliani walked 52 times and struck out 96 times in 109 games.

#13 Tillman Pugh GRADE: C+

#14 Reese Havens GRADE: B-

#15 Aderlin Rodriguez GRADE: C+
