Arizona Fall League Recap And Top Performances October 20th 2011

Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Robbie Grossman took over the Arizona Fall League home run lead on Thursday with his fifth home run as the Mesa Solar Sox beat the Scottsdale Scorpions 4-1. Number one overall pick Gerrit Cole went three scoreless innings in his second professional start and once again reportedly hit triple digits on the radar gun for Mesa. Bryce Harper had one of the two hits Cole allowed and now has his season average up to .211. The Phoenix Desert Dogs held on for a 10-9 win over the Peoria Javelinas. Milwaukee Brewers pitching prospect Cody Scarpetta gave up seven runs without recording an out in the start for Peoria. His final line was 0.0IP, 7ER, 4H, 3BB, 0K, and he allowed two home runs. The Peoria hitters rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth, but Cincinnati Reds pitching prospect Bradley Boxberger struck out San Diego Padres prospect Jaff Decker for the game’s final out. The Salt River Rafters defeated the Surprise Saguaros 7-2. Kansas City Royals prospect Wil Myers had three hits in the losing effort and ran his Arizona Fall League batting average to .343.

Arizona Fall League Recap And Top Performances October 19th 2011

Solid pitching efforts highlighted Wednesday’s Arizona Fall League schedule but there was a flurry of home runs mixed in. The Mesa Solar Sox beat the Scottsdale Scorpions 6-5. Mesa fell behind early as Chicago Cubs pitching prospect Trey McNutt started and went 1.2IP, 4R, 2ER, 5H, 1BB, 1K. However 7.1 innings of one run, three hit relief allowed Mesa to hang in long enough for their offense to plate six capped by Chicago White Sox prospect Tyler Saladino’s two run single in the ninth which would prove to be the game winner. The Peoria Javelinas defeated the Phoenix Desert Dogs 6-3 behind four no hit innings by Seattle Mariners 2011 first round pick Danny Hultzen. Peoria broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the ninth with a three run inning in which they sent eight batters to the plate. The Surprise Saguaros shut out the Salt River Rafters 6-0 behind the efforts of five pitchers. Florida Marlins prospect Alex Sanabia got the start and pitched five scoreless innings for Surprise. They Texas Rangers combo of Leonys Martin and Ryan Strausborger each hit a home run in the game.

Arizona Fall League Recap And Top Performances October 18th 2011

There were a trio of close games and lots of offense on Tuesday in the Arizona Fall League. The Salt River Rafters scored five in the seventh and four in the eighth to rally to a 12-9 win over the Mesa Solar Sox. Nolan Arenado had four hits including a home run and increased his Arizona Fall League leading RBI total to 19. Chicago Cubs pitching prospect Marcus Hadley allowed five runs on six hits in one inning of relief to take the loss for Mesa. The Surprise Saguaros took a 4-3 win over the Peoria Javelinas as Florida Marlins prospect Kevin Mattison singles, stole second, and scored on a throwing error in the top of the ninth for the eventual game winning run. San Diego Padres pitcher Anthony Bass started for Peoria and struck out eight over five innings but got a no decision. In the nightcap the Scottsdale Scorpions rallied for an 11-10 win over the Phoenix Desert Dogs. An RBI single from Washington Nationals prospect Derek Norris tied the game for Scottsdale in the top of the ninth and a sac fly from San Francisco Giants prospect Gary Brown drove in the eventual game winning run in the 10th. Bryce Harper had three hits including a his first Arizona Fall League home run for Scottsdale.

The Arizona Fall League continued to be a hitters league on Monday night. The Scottsdale Scorpions was the only team not to reach the seven run mark as they lost 7-4 to the Phoenix Desert Dogs. Toronto Blue Jays prospect Adeiny Hechavarria had an absolute monster game going 4-4 with 3 Triples and 4 RBI’s for Phoenix. Bryce Harper went 1-4 with a Double for Scottsdale raising his fall league average to .129. The Mesa Solar Sox beat up on the Salt River Rafters by a final of 13-7. Los Angeles Dodgers pitching prospect Stephen Fife fell to 0-3 on the season giving up seven runs in three innings for Salt River. Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Jarek Cunningham blasted a Triple and 2 Home Runs for Mesa. In the nightcap the Peoria Javelinas rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth, but left the tying run on second base as the Surprise Saguaros held on for an 8-7 win. Florida Marlins prospect Matt Dominguez had three hits including a grand slam and drove in six runs for Surprise.

Arizona Fall League Recap And Top Performances October 15th 2011

There was lots of offense on Saturday in the Arizona Fall League. The Mesa Solar Sox beat the Surprise Saguaros 14-3. Chicago Cubs prospect Junior Lake continued his assault of AFL pitching with three hits including a home run and four RBI’s for Mesa. Kansas City Royals pitcher Jeremy Jeffress was the hardest hit Surprise pitcher going 0.2IP, 5R, 2ER, 4H, 2BB, 0K out of the pen. The Peoria Javelinas defeated the Scottsdale Scorpions 8-7. The big news from the game was the professional debut for Washington Nationals 2011 first round pick Matt Purke who went two innings allowing one run on one hit. In the nightcap the Salt River Rafters won 8-7 in walk off fashion over the Phoenix Desert Dogs. Salt River won on a walk off wild pitch by Cincinnati Reds pitching prospect Nick Christiani that allowed Los Angeles Dogers prospect Brian Cavazos-Galvez to score from third base and win the game. Colorado Rockies prospect Nolan Arenado had a RBI in the game and has now driven in at least one run in six of the seven 2011 Arizona Fall League games played this season.

Arizona Fall League Recap And Top Performances October 14th 2011

One night after just one home run was hit, the Arizona Fall League exploded with power on Friday as the league’s six teams combined for 10 home runs. The Salt River Rafters beat the Phoenix Desert Dogs 7-5. The Salt River pitching staff combined to strike out 13 Desert Dogs batters and the offense blew the game open with four unearned runs in the seventh on their way to the win. The Surprise Saguaros beat the Mesa Solar Sox 16-8 in a slugfest that featured 32 hits between the two teams. Pittsburgh Pirates number one overall pick of the 2011 draft, Gerrit Cole from UCLA made his professional debut for Mesa going 2.1IP, 3ER, 3H, 1BB, 2K. He reportedly touched 100 mph on the radar gun. Tampa Bay Rays prospect Tim Beckham had a monster game for Surprise going 4-6 with 2 Doubles, 2 Triples, and 4 RBI’s. Chicago Cubs prospect Josh Vitters had four hits for Mesa and upped his season average to .405. In the night cap the Peoria Javelinas beat the Scottsdale Scorpions 14-5. San Diego Padres prospect Jedd Gyorko blasted a pair of Home Runs and drove in 4 RBI’s for Peoria. New York Mets pitching prospect Collin McHugh picked up the win scattering two runs on three hits in four innings of work.

Arizona Fall League Recap And Top Performances October 13th 2011

The first week and a half of the Arizona Fall League season saw an ton of offense with Home Runs flying out of every ball park at a rapid rate. Now a couple of starts into their seasons it would seem the pitchers are beginning to catch up. Cincinnati Reds prospect Brodie Greene was the only player to hit a Home Run in Thursday’s Arizona Fall League action. The Mesa Solar Sox pounded out 16 hits but were only able to score six of them in a 6-3 win over the Peoria Javelinas. Seattle Mariners pitching prospect Danny Hultzen made his second pro start for Peoria and pitched in and out of trouble, finishing with a line of 3IP, 1ER, 6H, 1BB, 0K. The Surprise Saguaros picked up a 6-2 win over the Phoenix Desert Dogs. Kansas City Royals pitcher Nate Adcock had a terrific start for Surprise giving up just one hit and striking out seven batters in three innings of work. The Surprise pitching staff combined to strike out 15 Desert Dogs in the game. In the nightcap, the Salt River Rafters picked up a 3-1 win over the Scottsdale Scorpions in a pitching dominate ballgame. Diamondbacks prospect Adam Eaton continued his hot hitting and pushed his batting average to .417 after a three hit day.

Arizona Fall League Recap And Top Performances October 12th 2011

Wednesday’s early games are complete in the Arizona Fall League. The Surprise Saguaros got four innings of hitless late innings relief from their bullpen their offense rallied for a 5-3 win over the Phoenix Desert Dogs. Trailing 3-1 heading to the bottom of the seventh, Surprise jumped on Toronto Blue Jays pitching prospect Evan Crawford for four runs in the inning. Atlanta Braves prospect Joe Terdoslavich had the big blow, a bases loaded triple. The Peoria Javelinas offense pounded out 12 hits and on the way to a 6-2 win over the Mesa Solar Sox. Milwaukee Brewers prospect Scooter Gennett led the way with three hits and raised his 2011 Arizona Fall League batting average to .421. Four Peoria relievers combined for five innings of one hit relief in the win. The nightcap was the Nolan Arenado show. The Colorado Rockies prospect and 2011 Minor League baseball RBI leader drove in five runs to lead the Salt River Rafters to a 10-5 win over the Scottsdale Scorpions.

There were a pair of one run games in the Arizona Fall League on Tuesday afternoon. The Peoria Javelinas defeated the Phoenix Desert Dogs 3-2. Phoenix got the 3rd Home Run of the season from Cleveland Indians prospect Jesus Aguilar in the losing effort. Brewers prospect Tyler Thornburg picks up the win for Peoria throwing two scoreless innings of relief. In the other afternoon game, the Mesa Solar Sox got four hitless innings from Chicago White Sox pitching prospect Terry Doyle and held off a late inning Scottsdale Scorpions rally to notch a 3-2 win. Bryce Harper was 0-3 with a walk in the loss and saw his 2011 Arizona Fall League batting average dip to .053 (1-19) on the season. In the nightcap, the Surprise Saguaros pounded out 16 hits on the way to an 11-4 win over the Salt River Rafters. Kansas City Royals prospect Wil Myers was a home run shy of the cycle for Surprise.
