Rangers Pitcher Mark Hamburger’s Unlikely Pro Career Began At A Twins Open Tryout

In addition to having one of the best names in baseball, Mark Hamburger also has one of the best stories as to how he made it into pro baseball. Hamburger was an unknown who happened to show up at a Minnesota Twins open tryout camp during the summer following his senior year of high school. He was playing summer baseball for the Tri City Shark club team, attended the Twins open tryout at the Metrodome, hit 93 on the gun and was offered a chance to sign. Four years later Hamburger is in the big leagues as a reliever for the Texas Rangers. In the story Hamburger talks about the Twins tryout camp, sharing the news of his call up with his family, and what its like playing in the big leagues. It’s a very good read.

Longtime Detroit Tigers Minor League Pitching Coordinator Jon Matlack Has No Idea Why He Was Fired

Last week Detroit Tigers Minor League Pitching Coordinator Jon Matlack was sitting in the stands watching the Triple-A Toledo Mudhens when he was unexpectedly called to the clubhouse. Even more unexpectedly he was fired by Tigers assistant GM Al Avila after 15 years in the organization. In the story Matlack, the 1972 National League Rookie Of The Year with the New York Mets, says he has “No Idea” why he was fired, talks about his time with the Tigers, and being regarded as one of the most highly regarded coaches by the Tigers minor league pitchers.

The Round Rock Express the Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers has produced three great campaign commercials in support of reliever Mark Hamburger who is currently in the second round of MILB.com’s Minors Moniker Madness which takes 64 of the best names in the minors and whittles them down to one champion via fan vote. Hamburger entered the competition as a four seed in the Farmer Works bracket and took down Chicago Cubs prospect Matt Szczur in the first round. He is currently matched with Minnesota Twins pitching prospect Shooter Hunt, a five seed. The Texas Rangers have a history of developing young talent and pushing them quickly through their system. Jorge Alfaro is looking to follow in the footsteps of players like Jurickson Profar and Martin Perez. The 18 year old Alfaro is currently at Short-A Northwest League as a member of the Spokane Indians. He is currently hitting .324 with 5(2B), 1(3B), 4HR, and 13RBI’s. While his plate discipline is poor, 33 strikeouts and just 3 walks in 105 at-bats, scouts are buzzing about his talent. Lou Piniella is arguably major league baseball’s first ballot hall of famer of base tossing. Phillip Wellman and Joe Mikulik have mastered the art at the Minor League level during classic tirades. Former Rangers, Mariners, and Reds catcher Donnie Scott, currently the manager of the Battle Creek Bombers of the Northwoods League, tried to duplicate the feat after being ejected a couple of weeks ago, but sadly lacks the distance needed to join the base throwing elite.

Prospect Breakdown: Padres Trade Mike Adams To Rangers For Robbie Erlin and Joe Wieland

The San Diego Padres have traded Mike Adams to the Texas Rangers for pitching prospects Robbie Erlin and Joe Wieland. The 20 year old Erlin is the number two ranked pitching prospect in the Rangers organization. This season between the High-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans and the Double-A Frisco Roughriders, Erlin has posted an 8-4 record with a 3.34 ERA. He has struck out 123 batters in 121 innings pitched while walking just 12 batters. Opposing hitters are batting .219 off him. In 2010 Erlin went 6-3 with a 2.12ERA for the Low-A Hickory Crawdads where he struck out 125 batters in 114 innings while walking just 17 batters. The 6’0″ lefty was a third round pick of the Rangers in the 2009 draft. Wieland, who threw a No Hitter this past Friday has had a breakout 2011 season between Myrtle Beach and Frisco going a combined 10-3 with a 1.80ERA while striking out 132 batters and walking just 15 in 129 innings of work. Opposing hitters are batting just .233. In 2010 between Hickory and the High-A Bakersfield Blaze, Wieland went 11-7 with a 4.07ERA. The 21 year old right hander was a fourth round pick by the Rangers in the 2008 draft.

Texas Rangers Pitching Prospect Joe Wieland Throws No Hitter For Double-A Frisco

Texas Rangers pitcher Joseph Wieland threw a No Hitter on Friday against the San Antonio Missions in Texas League action. The only thing separating Wieland from a perfect game was a seventh inning walk to Andy Parrino who was then erased on a caught stealing. Wieland faced the minimum 27 batters in the game. The final out was a ground out to second by Padres prospect Dan Robertson. The 21 year old right hander put up a final line of 9IP, 0ER, 0H, 1BB, 7K’s, and picked up his 4th win since debuting with the Double-A Frisco Roughriders during last week in June. He was 6-3 with a 2.10ERA in 13 starts for the High-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans prior to the promotion. Wieland was a fourth round pick of the Rangers in the 2008 draft.
