Washington Nationals Pitcher Stephen Strasburg Throws Five Perfect Innings In Syracuse Chiefs Rehab Start

Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg threw five perfect innings for the Syracuse Chiefs against the Rochester Red Wings in his fifth rehab start before allowing back to back hits in the 6th. Strasburg retired the first 15 batters in a row, allowing no hits and striking out seven Rochester batters. He threw 58 pitches, 44 of them for strikes. He came back out in the sixth inning for seven more pitches as he worked towards a predetermined 65 pitch count and gave up a single to Aaron Bates to lead off the 6th breaking up the perfect game and no hitter bids. Strasburg then allowed a single to Steve Holm before departing in favor of reliever Craig Stammen. Stammen allowed an RBI single to Ray Chang which scored Bates before recording the final two outs of the inning. As a result Strasburg will get a no decision and have a final line of 5+IP, 1ER, 2H, 0BB, 7K. It is by far the best rehab start for the Washington Nationals pitcher as he returns from Tommy John surgery. He is slated to make one final rehab start before rejoining the Nationals in September.

Stephen Strasburg Competes First Washington Nationals Rehab Start With Hagerstown Suns

Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg began his 2011 season with his first rehab start for the Low-A Hagerstown Suns. Strasburg who is 11 months removed from Tommy John surgery went 1.2 innings allowing one run on three hits. He did not walk a batter, and four of the five outs he recorded were by strikeout. His only blemish on the scoreboard was a solo home run by Greensboro Grasshoppers catcher Jacob Realmuto in the second inning. He through 31 pitches, 25 of which were for strikes. Strasburg’s next rehab start is expected to take place with the High-A Potomac Nationals.

Stephen Strasburg Is Days Away From Beginning Rehab Assignment

Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg is likely days away from beginning a minor league rehab assignment according to MASNSports.com. The 23 year old Strasburg is coming off Tommy John surgery. He is likely to begin his rehab with the Low-A Hagerstown Suns before progressing to High-A Potomac and moving up from there. The former first overall pick back in 2009 created a frenzy, selling out stadiums across the northeast, as he moved through the minors in 2010, going 7-2 with a 1.30ERA in 11 combined starts for the Double-A Harrisburg Senators and Triple-A Syracuse Chiefs. Strasburg made his major league debut on June 9th against the Pittsburgh Pirates and struck out 14 batters. He went 5-3 with a 2.91ERA in 12 big league starts before he tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow on August 21st, 2010 against the Philadelphia Phillies and had Tommy John surgery on September 3rd. If Strasburg’s rehab assignment runs smoothly it is likely he will be back in the Nationals rotation sometime in early September, a little over a year after the injury occurred.

Braves Prospect Phil Gosselin Talks About Playing High-A Baseball Near His Hometown

Phil Gosselin is probably best known for cranking a Home Run off the then unbeaten Stephen Strasburg that helped the Virginia Cavaliers beat San Diego State in the 2009 NCAA Regional. However now that he’s turned pro, Gosselin is beginning to makie a name for himself in the Carolina League as the second baseman is one of the batter hitters on the Lynchburg Hillcats. The Atlanta Braves farmhand is batting .272 with 22 doubles, five triples, five home runs, and 51 RBI’s so far this season. In the story below, Gosselin talks about staying focused in his first full season, playing close to home in Lynchburg, getting to see his Virginia Cavaliers make it to the NCAA’s once again, and playing minor league ball for Luis Salazar who lost his eye after being hit with a line drive during spring training.
