Arizona Fall League Recap And Top Performances October 27th 2011

The Scottsdale Scorpions used a three run Walk Off Home Run by Washington Nationals top prospect Bryce Harper to beat the Mesa Solar Sox 8-7 on Thursday. Harper drove in four on the day and extended his hitting streak to nine games. On the other side of the ledger, fellow Nationals prospect Matt Purke was hammered once again, allowing three earned runs in one inning. His fall league ERA stands at 29.70. The Peoria Javelinas needed eleven innings to defeat the Phoenix Desert Dogs 7-5. Cleveland Indians prospect Roberto Perez was a triple shy of the cycle for Phoenix. Cincinnati Reds pitcher Aroldis Chapman went one and two thirds innings allowing one run on one hit while walking a batter and striking out one for Phoenix. The Surprise Saguaros scored two in the top of the ninth to pull out a 5-3 win over the Salt River Rafters. Nolan Arenado homered for the third consecutive game and drove in his league leading 23rd and 24th RBI’s of the year for Salt River.

Arizona Fall League Recap And Top Performances October 26th 2011

There was a power surge Wednesday in the Arizona Fall League as 11 home runs were hit in over the league’s three games. The Phoenix Desert Dogs beat the Peoria Javelinas 7-6 in 10 innings. Oakland Athletics prospect Grant Green hit home run in the top of the 10th that proved to be the difference. Seattle Mariners pitching prospect Danny Hultzen allowed a run on two hits while striking out five in three and two thirds innings for Peoria. Gerrit Cole the Pittsburgh Pirates top overall pick in the 2011 draft went three and two thirds hitless innings to help lead the Mesa Solar Sox to a 10-5 win over the Scottsdale Scorpions. Washington Nationals prospect Bryce Harper hit his second Arizona Fall League Home Run and drove in four in the losing effort for Scottsdale. The Salt River Rafters picked up a 6-2 win over the Surprise Saguaros. Tampa Bay Rays prospect Mikie Mahtook hit his first professional home run.

The Surprise Saguaros defeated the Mesa Solar Sox 8-6 on a Walk Off Home Run by Texas Rangers prospect Ryan Strausborger. Fellow Rangers prospect Mike Olt blasted two home runs to jump into the Arizona Fall League lead in Home Runs with 6th. Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Robbie Grossman also blasted his sixth home run for Mesa. The Salt River Rafters took home a 4-3 win over the Phoenix Desert Dogs. Colorado Rockies prospect Nolan Arenado homered and drove in his league leading 21st RBI. Yankees outfield prospect Rob Segedin homered in the losing effort. Tuesday’s Arizona Fall League nightcap between the Peoria Javelinas and the Scottsdale Scorpions was rained out.

Arizona Fall League Recap And Top Performances October 24th 2011

Monday was one of the rare days of the 2011 Arizona Fall League season where balls were not flying out of the yard at a torrid pace, as just three home runs were hit across the league. The Phoenix Desert Dogs beat the Salt River Rafters 4-1. The game featured the debut of Cincinnati Reds pitcher Aroldis Chapman who pitched a scoreless inning in the first of three scheduled fall league appearances for Phoenix. The Peoria Javelinas defeated the Scottsdale Scorpions 8-4. Seattle Mariners pitching prospect Steven Hensley picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief. Boston Red Sox pitching prospect Will Latimer was roughed up allowing four earned runs in one third of an inning for Scottsdale. The Surprise Saguaros got the 8-3 win over the Mesa Solar Sox. Wil Myers had three hits and drove in three runs for Surprise, while Mesa’s Robbie Grossman raised his season average to .400 after a three hit day.

Arizona Fall League Recap And Top Performances October 22nd 2011

There were a trio of blowouts as the Arizona Fall League season continued with three afternoon games on Saturday. The Scottsdale Scorpions defeated the Phoenix Desert Dogs 9-4. After being held to just one run in the first five innings, Scottsdale exploded for eight runs off three Phoenix relievers in the final four innings to coast to the win. Cleveland Indians pitching prospect T.J. McFarland pitched three scoreless innings in the start for Phoenix to lower his Arizona Fall League ERA to 1.46. The Mesa Solar Sox beat the Salt River Rafters 9-2. Mesa stole five bases off Salt River catcher Gorman Erickson of the Los Angeles Dodgers system. Chicago Cubs prospect Junior Lake had four hits, three RBI’s, and stole his 11th base of the fall for Mesa. The Peoria Javelinas picked up a 10-3 win over the Surprise Saguaros. The surprise bullpen blew a solid pitching performance from Atlanta Braves prospect Sean Gilmartin who allowed just one run on four hits in five innings. Kansas City Royals pitching prospect Bryan Paukovits took the blown save and loss allowing five runs in one third of an inning. New York Mets prospect Juan Lagares had three hits and four RBI’s for Peoria.

Arizona Fall League Recap And Top Performances October 21st 2011

Friday’s Arizona Fall League action was kicked off with the Mesa Solar Sox picking up a 5-1 win over the Phoenix Desert Dogs. A strong pitching start be Minnesota Twins pitching prospect Cole DeVries paced Mesa who saw their offense jump all over Oakland Athletics pitching prospect Murphy Smith who gave up five runs on eight hits in four and two thirds innings. The Surprise Saguaros won a slugfest with the Scottsdale Scorpions. Surprise jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning as they hammered Washington Nationals first round pick Matt Purke who went 0.1IP, 7ER, 5H, 1BB, 0K and also hit a batter. The Scottsdale offense battled back and tied the game 8-8 in the top of the seventh before Surprise put up a five run bottom of the seventh off Pat Lehman another Nationals pitching prospect. In the nightcap, the Salt River Rafters beat the Peoria Javelinas 2-1 behind a solid start from Arizona Diamondbacks pitching prospect Charles Brewer. A third inning Home Run by Colorado Rockies prospect Tim Wheeler in the third inning proved to be the game winner.

Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Robbie Grossman took over the Arizona Fall League home run lead on Thursday with his fifth home run as the Mesa Solar Sox beat the Scottsdale Scorpions 4-1. Number one overall pick Gerrit Cole went three scoreless innings in his second professional start and once again reportedly hit triple digits on the radar gun for Mesa. Bryce Harper had one of the two hits Cole allowed and now has his season average up to .211. The Phoenix Desert Dogs held on for a 10-9 win over the Peoria Javelinas. Milwaukee Brewers pitching prospect Cody Scarpetta gave up seven runs without recording an out in the start for Peoria. His final line was 0.0IP, 7ER, 4H, 3BB, 0K, and he allowed two home runs. The Peoria hitters rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth, but Cincinnati Reds pitching prospect Bradley Boxberger struck out San Diego Padres prospect Jaff Decker for the game’s final out. The Salt River Rafters defeated the Surprise Saguaros 7-2. Kansas City Royals prospect Wil Myers had three hits in the losing effort and ran his Arizona Fall League batting average to .343.

Arizona Fall League Recap And Top Performances October 19th 2011

Solid pitching efforts highlighted Wednesday’s Arizona Fall League schedule but there was a flurry of home runs mixed in. The Mesa Solar Sox beat the Scottsdale Scorpions 6-5. Mesa fell behind early as Chicago Cubs pitching prospect Trey McNutt started and went 1.2IP, 4R, 2ER, 5H, 1BB, 1K. However 7.1 innings of one run, three hit relief allowed Mesa to hang in long enough for their offense to plate six capped by Chicago White Sox prospect Tyler Saladino’s two run single in the ninth which would prove to be the game winner. The Peoria Javelinas defeated the Phoenix Desert Dogs 6-3 behind four no hit innings by Seattle Mariners 2011 first round pick Danny Hultzen. Peoria broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the ninth with a three run inning in which they sent eight batters to the plate. The Surprise Saguaros shut out the Salt River Rafters 6-0 behind the efforts of five pitchers. Florida Marlins prospect Alex Sanabia got the start and pitched five scoreless innings for Surprise. They Texas Rangers combo of Leonys Martin and Ryan Strausborger each hit a home run in the game.

Arizona Fall League Recap And Top Performances October 18th 2011

There were a trio of close games and lots of offense on Tuesday in the Arizona Fall League. The Salt River Rafters scored five in the seventh and four in the eighth to rally to a 12-9 win over the Mesa Solar Sox. Nolan Arenado had four hits including a home run and increased his Arizona Fall League leading RBI total to 19. Chicago Cubs pitching prospect Marcus Hadley allowed five runs on six hits in one inning of relief to take the loss for Mesa. The Surprise Saguaros took a 4-3 win over the Peoria Javelinas as Florida Marlins prospect Kevin Mattison singles, stole second, and scored on a throwing error in the top of the ninth for the eventual game winning run. San Diego Padres pitcher Anthony Bass started for Peoria and struck out eight over five innings but got a no decision. In the nightcap the Scottsdale Scorpions rallied for an 11-10 win over the Phoenix Desert Dogs. An RBI single from Washington Nationals prospect Derek Norris tied the game for Scottsdale in the top of the ninth and a sac fly from San Francisco Giants prospect Gary Brown drove in the eventual game winning run in the 10th. Bryce Harper had three hits including a his first Arizona Fall League home run for Scottsdale.

The Arizona Fall League continued to be a hitters league on Monday night. The Scottsdale Scorpions was the only team not to reach the seven run mark as they lost 7-4 to the Phoenix Desert Dogs. Toronto Blue Jays prospect Adeiny Hechavarria had an absolute monster game going 4-4 with 3 Triples and 4 RBI’s for Phoenix. Bryce Harper went 1-4 with a Double for Scottsdale raising his fall league average to .129. The Mesa Solar Sox beat up on the Salt River Rafters by a final of 13-7. Los Angeles Dodgers pitching prospect Stephen Fife fell to 0-3 on the season giving up seven runs in three innings for Salt River. Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Jarek Cunningham blasted a Triple and 2 Home Runs for Mesa. In the nightcap the Peoria Javelinas rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth, but left the tying run on second base as the Surprise Saguaros held on for an 8-7 win. Florida Marlins prospect Matt Dominguez had three hits including a grand slam and drove in six runs for Surprise.
