TOP PROSPECT ALERT - Seth Smith OF

Acquired: Colorado Rockies- 2nd Round Draft Pick 2004

(Rookie - Casper Rockies)

.427 OBP, .601 SLG.

Outfielder Seth Smith is a potential star in the making for the Colorado Rockies.

After being drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the second round of the 2004 major league draft, Smith, a two sport athlete at Ole Miss, decided to forgo his senior season with the Rebels and try his luck at professional baseball. The Rockies are glad to have him.

Despite a less than stellar 2004 collegiate season .284, 7 HR, 40 RBI, Smith burst onto the Pioneer League scene with a .369, 9 HR, 61 RBI start at Casper. The Rockies rewarded Smith with a promotion to their Northern League, Short-Season A ball affiliate the Tri-City Dust Devils for the final nine games of the 2004 season.

While at Ole Miss, Smith rewrote the record books during a 2002 Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year run which saw him break school records in batting average (.402), hits (82), RBI's (52), total bases (107), and On-Base Percentage (.452). Smith also has international playing experience as a member of the 2003 U.S. National Team. The Terry, Mississippi native helped pace the U.S., hitting .322, 4 HR, 9 RBI, during a silver medal run at the Pan Am Games.

Despite the 100+ point drop in his batting average over the course of his three seasons at Ole Miss, the Rockies did not hesitate to pull the trigger on draft day, and if first impressions mean anything, Smith may be well on his way to a promising pro career. Look for Smith to open the 2005 season in the South Atlantic League, with a good chance of a midseason promotion to High-A. Smith is still a good two years away from the majors but if he continues to develop look for him to be taking his hacks at the Coors Field thin air sometime in late 2006.
