The younger brother of Pittsburgh Pirates
outfielder Brian,Marcus has continually progressed forward in development
to the point where he is the Atlanta Braves future second baseman. At 5
foot 8 and about 180 pounds, he most people are surprised when they first
seem him, since going by the numbers, you don't expect someone of his size
to be a power force. But after seeing his muscular form, it's no surprise
that he put up 37 home runs, 108 RBI, 85 walks, 38 doubles, all while
hitting .329 and slugging .636 at Single-A Macon in 1998. He has a very
nice compact swing. The only hole I saw in Marcus' game was his defense,
but in 1999 he continued to show improvement at Myrtle Beach. He will
never develop into a gold glover winner in the filed, but it is his bat
that will get him to Atlanta and keep him there well into the 21st
Century.
The former 53 round draft pick in 1996 out of El Cajon High School (CA)
was MVP of the South Atlantic League All-Star Game in 1998 and the MVP of
the Carolina League All-Star Game MVP in 1999. This past season also
brought the righthander the MVP award for the Carolina League where he hit
.326, with 13 HR's, 73 RBI, 7 triples and 40 doubles while forming the
double-play combination with the Braves other top infield prospect,Rafael
Furcal, for part of the season. Marcus is one of my favorite minor leaguers
and is one of the best second base prospects at any level. He be another
great Braves prospect to develop into a star.
