Ken Harvey: The Kansas City Royals fifth round selection in the 1999
draft out of the University of Nebraska, Harvey was one of the best
hitters anywhere in NCAA baseball and has continued doing so in his early
career.
After leading all Division I batters with a .478 average,
Harvey debuted last season at short-season Spokane and earned all-star
honors by batting a league-leading .397 average with 8 home runs, 41 runs
batted in, 17 doubles, 49 runs scored, 23 walks, 30 strikeouts, and 7
steals in 204 at-bats. This season, the 22-year-old again hit well in
limited time at Single-A Wilmington (.335, 4 HR, 25 RBI, 10 2B, 20 R, 14
BB and 29 SO in 164 AB).
In the field at first base, Harvey his
fielding is not up to his hitting. He needs further development here in
order to be able to be a regular in Kansa City, but with his line drive
swing, Harvey doesn't have to be a gold glover or anything like that as
his bat should get him to the majors. Defense wil be what determines if he
can be a regular in the field. In 2000, he had three errors at Wilmington.
Otherwise, you always have the DH option available.
As long as he
is healthy, I would say you could look for Harvery to debut for the Royals
probably by late 2002 if everything works
out.
