2011 Washington Nationals Top 15 Prospects Post Season Report Card

With the 2011 minor league season complete we check in on the progress of each of the Washington Nationals preseason Top 15 prospects as ranked by our prospect ranker J.P. Schwartz. The post season grading report was done by the publisher of Top Prospect Alert, not Mr. Schwartz, and reflects only the 2011 season and not future upside or downside of the individual prospect. Our 2012 preseason rankings will be published in the coming months.

#1 Bryce Harper GRADE: B
Harper batted a combined .297 with 24 Doubles, 2 Triples, 17 Home Runs and 58 RBI’s between the Low-A Hagerstown Suns and the Double-A Harrisburg Senators. He walked 59 times and struck out 87 times in 109 games.

#2 Wilson Ramos GRADE: A-
Ramos batted .267 with 22 Doubles, 1 Triple, 15 Home Runs and 52 RBI’s for the Nationals. He walked 38 times and struck out 76 times in 113 games.

#3 Sammy Solis GRADE: B+
Solis went a combined 8-3 with a 3.26ERA between the High-A Potomac Nationals and Double-A Harrisburg. He walked 23 and struck out 93 in 96.2 innings. Opposing batters hit .268 against Solis on the year.

#4 Derek Norris GRADE: C+
Norris batted .210 with 17 Doubles, 1 Triple, 20 Home Runs and 46 RBI’s for Double-A Harrisburg. He walked 77 times and struck out 117 times in 104 games. He also stole 13 bases on the season.

#5 A.J. Cole GRADE: B
Cole went 4-7 with a 4.04ERA for Low-A Hagerstown. He walked 24 and struck out 108 in 89 innings. Opposing batters hit .251 off Cole on the season.

#6 Danny Espinosa GRADE: B
Espinosa batted .236 with 29 Doubles, 5 Triples, 21 Home Runs and 66 RBI’s for the Nationals. He also stole 17 bases. Espinosa walked 57 times and struck out 166 times in 158 big league games.

#7 Chris Marrero GRADE: A-
Marrero batted .300 with 30 Doubles, 14 Home Runs, and 69 RBI’s for the Triple-A Syracuse Chiefs. He walked 58 times and struck out 97 times in 127 games. In the majors, Marrero hit .248 with 5 Doubles and 10 RBI’s in 31 big league games.

#8 Tyler Moore GRADE: A-
Moore batted .270 with 35 Doubles, 4 Triples, 31 Home Runs and 90 RBI’s for Double-A Harrisburg. He walked 30 times and struck out 139 times in 137 games.

#9 Eury Perez GRADE: B+
Perez batted .283 with 9 Doubles, 2 Triples, 1 Home Run and 41 RBI’s for High-A Potomac. He also stole 45 bases. Perez walked 22 times and struck out 63 times in 119 games.

#10 Brad Peacock GRADE: A+
Peacock went a combined 15-3 with a 2.39ERA between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Syracuse. He walked 47 times and struck out 177 in 146.2 innings of work. Opposing batters hit just .188 against Peacock. In 12 big league innings with the Nationals, Peacock went 2-0 with a 0.75ERA.

#11 Robbie Ray GRADE: A-
Ray went 2-3 with a 3.13ERA for the Low-A Hagerstown Suns. He walked 38 batters and struck out 95 in 89 innings. Opposing batters hit just .221 off Ray on the year.

#12 Destin Hood GRADE: B+
Hood batted .276 with 29 Doubles, 5 Triples, 13 Home Runs and 83 RBI’s for High-A Potomac. He also stole 21 bases on the season. He walked 58 times and struck out 96 times in 128 games.

#13 Steve Lombardozzi GRADE: A Lombardozzi batted a combined .309 with 25 Doubles, 9 Triples, 8 Home Runs and 52 RBI’s between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Syracuse. He also stole 30 bases. He walked 39 times and struck out 78 times in 134 games. In the majors, Lombardozzi batted .194 with 1 Double and 1 RBI in 31 at-bats with the Nationals.

#14 Rick Hague NO GRADE
Hague played just four games with the Potomac Nationals before a season ending shoulder injury.

#15 Yunesky Maya GRADE: C-
Maya went 4-9 with a 5.00ERA for Triple-A Syracuse. He walked 28 and struck out 98 in 129 innings. Opposing batters hit .265 off Maya. In the majors, Maya was 1-1 with a 5.23ERA in 32.2 innings. Major league hitters batted .323 against him.

2011 Toronto Blue Jays Top 15 Prospects Post Season Report Card

#1 Kyle Drabek GRADE: D
Drabek went 4-5 with a 6.06ERA for the Blue Jays. He walked 55 and struck out 51 in 78.2 innings. Opposing big leaguers hit .289 against him. For the Triple-A Las Vegas 51s, Drabek fared even worse going 5-4 with a 7.44ERA. He walked 41 and struck out 45 in 75 innings. Opposing minor leaguers hit an absurd .355 against Drabek on the year.

#2 Brett Lawrie GRADE: A+
Lawrie batted .293 with 8 Doubles, 4 Triples, 9 Home Runs, and 25 RBI’s in 43 big league games with the Blue Jays. In the minors, Lawrie hit .353 with 24 Doubles, 6 Triples, 18 Home Runs, and 61 RBI’s in 69 games for Triple-A Las Vegas. He also stole 13 bases.

#3 J.P. Arencibia GRADE: B+
Arencibia batted .219 with 20 Doubles, 4 Triples, 23 Home Runs and 78 RBI’s for the Blue Jays. He walked 36 times and struck out 133 times in 129 games.

#4 Carlos Perez GRADE: C+
Perez batted .256 with 17 Doubles, 6 Triples, 3 Home Runs and 41 RBI’s for the Low-A Lansing Lugnuts. He walked 37 times and struck out 74 times in 95 games.

#5 Deck McGuire GRADE: A-
McGuire went a combined 9-5 with a 3.02ERA between the High-A Dunedin Blue Jays and the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats. He walked 45 and struck out 124 batters in 125.1 innings. Opposing batters hit .232 against McGuire on the season.

#6 Asher Wojciechowski GRADE: C
Wojciechowski went 11-9 with a 4.70ERA for High-A Dunedin. He walked 31 batters and struck out 96 in 130.1 innings. Opposing batters hit .292 against him on the season.

#7 Aaron Sanchez GRADE: C+
Sanchez went a combined 3-3 with a 5.30ERA between the Rookie League Bluefield Blue Jays and the Short-A Vancouver Canadians. He walked 26 and struck out 56 in 54.1 innings. Opposing batters hit .292 off Sanchez on the year.

#8 Adeiny Hechavarria GRADE: B
Hechavarria batted a combined .264 with 28 Doubles, 8 Triples, 8 Home Runs and 57 RBI’s between Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Las Vegas. He also stole 20 bases. He walked 33 times and struck out 99 times in 136 innings.

#9 Travis d’Arnaud GRADE: A
d’Arnaud batted .311 with 33 Doubles, 1 Triple, 21 Home Runs and 78 RBI’s for Double-A New Hampshire. He walked 33 times and struck out 100 times in 114 games.

#10 Zach Stewart TRADED TO CHICAGO WHITE SOX
Stewart was traded to the White Sox as part of the three team trade with the Cardinals that brought Colby Rasmus to the Blue Jays. Stewart went a combined 2-6 with a 5.88ERA in 67.1 big league innings between the Blue Jays and White Sox. Stewart was 5-5 with a 4.20ERA at Triple-A Las Vegas prior to the trade.

#11 Dickie Joe Thon GRADE: C-
Thon batted .223 with 3 Doubles, 3 Home Runs and 15 RBI’s for the Rookie League GCL Blue Jays. He walked 23 times and struck out 44 times in 45 games.

#12 Anthony Gose GRADE: A-
Gose batted .253 with 20 Doubles, 7 Triples, 16 Home Runs and 56 RBI’s for Double-A New Hampshire. He also stole 70 bases. Gose walked 62 times and struck out 154 times in 137 games.

#13 Jake Marisnick GRADE: A
Marisnick batted .320 with 27 Doubles, 6 Triples, 14 Home Runs and 77 RBI’s for Low-A Lansing. He walked 43 times and struck out 91 times in 118 games. He also stole 37 bases on the season.

#14 Chad Jenkins GRADE: B-
Jenkins went 9-12 with a 3.70ERA between High-A Dunedin and Double-A New Hampshire. He walked 41 batters and struck out 118 in 167.2 innings. Opposing batters hit .255 against Jenkins on the season.

#15 Adonis Cardona GRADE: B-
Cardona went 1-4 with a 4.55ERA for the Rookie League GCL Blue Jays. He walked 12 and struck out 35 in 31.2 innings. Opposing batters hit .256 off Cardona on the season.

#1 Martin Perez GRADE: B-
Perez went a combined 8-6 with a 4.33ERA between the Double-A Frisco RoughRiders and the Triple-A Round Rock Express. He walked 56 and struck out 120 in 137.1 innings. Opposing batters hit .284 off of Perez on the season.

#2 Jurickson Profar GRADE: A+
Profar batted .286 with 37 Doubles, 8 Triples, 12 Home Runs and 65 RBI’s for the Low-A Hickory Crawdads. He also stole 23 bases on the season. He walked 65 times and struck out 63 times in 115 games.

#3 Tanner Scheppers GRADE: B-
Scheppers went a combined 4-1 with a 3.71ERA and 2 Saves between Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Round Rock. He walked 21 batters and struck out 44 in 43.2 innings. Opposing batters hit .252 off Scheppers on the year.

#4 Robbie Erlin TRADED TO SAN DIEGO
Erlin went to the Padres in the Mike Adams deal. He went a combined 9-4 with a 2.99ERA between the Low-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Double-A Frisco, and the Padres Double-A San Antonio affiliate. He walked just 16 batters while striking out 154 in 147.1 innings.

#5 David Perez GRADE: C
Perez went 1-4 with a 8.60ERA for the Short-A Spokane Indians. He walked 29 and struck out 43 in 30.1 innings. Opposing batters hit .223 against him on the season.

#6 Mike Olt GRADE: B+
Olt batted .264 with 15 Doubles, 15 Home Runs, and 46 RBI’s between a four game rehab stop with the Rookie League AZL Rangers and 69 games with High-A Myrtle Beach. He walked 49 times and struck out 75 times in 73 at-bats.

#7 Engel Beltre GRADE: C-
Beltre batted .231 with 15 Doubles, 6 Triples, 1 Home Run and 28 RBI’s for Double-A Frisco. He also stole 16 bases on the season. He walked 28 times and struck out 103 times in 118 games.

#8 Roman Mendez GRADE: A-
Mendez went 9-1 with a 3.31ERA for Low-A Hickory. He walked 45 and struck out 130 in 117 innings. Opposing batters hit .259 off Mendez on the season.

#9 Neil Ramirez GRADE: A
Ramirez went a combined 5-3 with a 3.12ERA between High-A Myrtle Beach, Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Round Rock. He walked 44 and struck out 119 in 98 innings. Opposing batters hit just .215 off Ramirez on the season.

#10 Robbie Ross GRADE: A
Ross went a combined 10-5 with a 2.34ERA between High-A Myrtle Beach and Double-A Frisco. He walked 33 batters and struck out 134 in 161.1 innings of work. Opposing batters hit just .228 off Ross on the year.

#11 Miguel de los Santos GRADE: B-
de los Santos went a combined 7-6 with a 5.04ERA between a rehab start with Rookie League AZL Rangers, 12 starts at High-A Myrtle Beach and 6 starts for Double-A Frisco. He walked 46 and struck out 142 in 94.2 innings. Opposing batters hit .219 off de los Santos on the season.

#12 Jake Skole GRADE: B-
Skole batted .264 with 14 Doubles, 6 Triples, 9 Home Runs and 62 RBI’s for Low-A Hickory. He also stole 21 bases. Skole walked 65 times and struck out 138 times in 124 games.

#14 Kellin Deglan GRADE: C
Deglan batted .227 with 15 Doubles, 1 Triple, 6 Home Runs, and 39 RBI’s for Low-A Hickory. He walked 34 times and struck out 91 times in 89 games.

#15 Jared Hoying GRADE: C+
Hoying hit .236 with 27 Doubles, 4 Triples, 5 Home Runs and 45 RBI’s for High-A Myrtle Beach. He also stole 10 bases. Hoying walked 45 times and struck out 98 times in 116 games.

#1 Jeremy Hellickson GRADE: A
Hellickson went 13-10 with a 2.95ERA for the Rays. He walked 72 and struck out 117 in 189 innings. Opposing big league hitters hit just .210 off Hellickson on the season.

#2 Desmond Jennings GRADE: A
Jennings batted .259 with 9 Doubles, 4 Triples, 10 Home Runs and 25 RBI’s in 63 games with the Rays. He also stole 20 bases on the season. For the Triple-A Durham Bulls, Jennings hit .275 with 19 Doubles, 3 Triples, 12 Home Runs and 39 RBI’s in 89 games. He also stole 17 bases for the Bulls.

#3 Matt Moore GRADE: A+
Moore went 12-3 with a 1.92ERA between the Double-A Montgomery Biscuits and Triple-A Durham. He walked 46 and struck out 210 in 155 innings. Opposing batters hit just .184 against Moore. For the Rays, Moore went 1-0 with a 2.89ERA in 9.1 big league innings. He also stared in the playoffs for Tampa Bay.

#4 Josh Sale GRADE: C-
Sale hit .210 with 11 Doubles, 3 Triples, 4 Home Runs, and 15 RBI’s for the Rookie League Princeton Rays. He walked 23 times and struck out 41 times in 60 games.

#5 Jake McGee GRADE: B-
McGee went 5-2 with a 4.50ERA in 37 appearances with the Rays. He walked 12 and struck out 27 in 28 big league innings. Opposing major league hitters batted .270 against him. At Triple-A Durham, McGee went 4-2 with a 2.70ERA in 24 appearances.

#6 Chris Archer GRADE: B-
Archer went a combined 9-7 with a 4.09ERA between Double-A Montgomery and two starts at Triple-A Durham. He walked 86 and struck out 130 in 147.1 innings. Opposing batters hit .263 off Archer on the year.

#7 Alex Colome GRADE: B
Colome went a combined 12-9 with a 3.82ERA between the Low-A Charlotte Stone Crabs and Double-A Montgomery. He walked 72 and struck out 123 in 157.2 innings. Opposing batters hit just .216 against Colome on the season.

#8 Hak-Ju Lee GRADE: B
Lee batted a combined .292 with 17 Doubles, 15 Triples, 5 Home Runs and 30 RBI’s. He also stole 33 bases. Lee walked 53 times and struck out 94 times in 121 games

#9 Joseph Cruz GRADE: D+
Cruz went a combined 6-5 with a 6.27ERA between the Rookie League GCL Rays, High-A Charlotte, and Double-A Montgomery. He walked 28 and struck out 64 in 74.2 innings. Opposing batters hit .312 against Cruz on the season.

#10 Enny Romero GRADE: B
Romero went 5-5 with a 4.26ERA for the Low-A Bowling Green Hot Rods. He walked 68 and struck out 140 in 114 innings of work. Opposing batters hit .245 off Romero on the season.

#11 Alex Torres GRADE: B
Torres went 9-7 with a 3.08ERA for Triple-A Durham. He walked 83 and struck out 156 in 146 innings. Opposing batters hit .249 against Torres. In 8 big league innings, Torres went 1-1 with a 3.38ERA over four appearances out of the Rays pen.

#12 Drew Vettleson GRADE: B+
Vettleson hit .282 with 13 Doubles, 4 Triples, 7 Home Runs and 40 RBI’s for Rookie League Princeton. He walked 27 times and struck out 53 times in 61 games.

#13 Brandon Guyer GRADE: A-
Guyer batted .312 with 29 Doubles, 5 Triples, 14 Home Runs and 61 RBI’s for Triple-A Durham. He walked 35 times and struck out 79 times in 107 games. For the Rays, Guyer batted .195 with 1 Double, 2 Home Runs and 3 RBI’s in 41 big league at-bats.

#14 Justin O’Conner GRADE: D+
O’Conner batted .157 with 8 Doubles, 9 Home Runs and 29 RBI’s for Low-A Princeton. He walked 17 times and struck out 78 times in 48 games.

#15 Jake Thompson GRADE: B-
Thompson went 5-7 with a 2.90ERA for High-A Charlotte. He walked 37 and struck out 56 in 114.2 innings. Opposing batters hit .267 against Thompson.

Ackley batted .273 with 16 Doubles, 7 Triples, 6 Home Runs and 36 RBI’s for the Mariners. He walked 40 times and struck out 79 times in 90 big league games. In the minors, Ackley batted .303 with 17 Doubles, 3 Triples, 9 Home Runs and 35 RBI’s for the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers.

#2 Michael Pineda GRADE: A
Pineda went 9-10 with a 3.74ERA for the Mariners. He walked 55 and struck out 173 in 171 innings. Opposing major league hitters batted just .211 against Pineda.

#3 Nick Franklin GRADE: B-
Franklin batted a combined .281 with 13 Doubles, 7 Triples, 7 Home Runs and 26 RBI’s between the Rookie League AZL Mariners (three rehab games), the High-A High Desert Mavericks, and the Double-A Jackson Generals. He walked 30 times and struck out 80 times in 88 at-bats.

#4 Alex Liddi GRADE: A-
Liddi batted .259 with 32 Doubles, 3 Triples, 30 Home Runs and 104 RBI’s for Triple-A Tacoma. He walked 61 times and struck out 170 times in 138 games. In 15 big league games with the Mariners, Liddi batted .225 with 3 Doubles, 3 Home Runs, and 6 RBI’s.

#5 Johermyn Chavez GRADE: C-
Chavez batted .216 with 16 Doubles, 4 Triples, 13 Home Runs and 50 RBI’s for Double-A Jackson. He walked 49 times and struck out 124 times in 126 games.

#6 Blake Beavan GRADE: B-
Beavan went 5-6 with a 4.27ERA in 15 starts with the Mariners. He walked 15 and struck out 42 in 97 innings of work. Opposing big leaguers hit .278 off Beavan. In the minors, Beavan went 5-3 with a 4.45ERA for Triple-A Tacoma.

#7 Guillermo Pimentel GRADE: B
Pimentel batted .265 with 10 Doubles, 11 Home Runs and 46 RBI’s for the Rookie League Pulaski Mariners. He walked 15 times and struck out 73 times in 65 games.

#8 Stephen Pryor GRADE: B
Pryor went a combined 3-1 with a 4.71ERA and 10 saves between High-A High Desert and Double-A Jackson. After posting a 7.67ERA in High-A, Pryor dominated in Double-A posting a 1.19ERA and holding opponents to a .123 batting average. Overall he walked 33 and struck out 61 in 49.2 innings of work.

#9 Ji-Man Choi DID NOT PLAY
Choi missed all of 2011 with a shoulder injury.

#10 Marcus Littlewood GRADE: D+
Littlewood batted a combined .192 with 13 Doubles, 2 Triples, 9 Home Runs and 36 RBI’s between the Short-A Everett AquaSox and the Low-A Clinton Lumberkings. He walked 55 times and struck out 104 times in 89 games.

#11 Carlos Peguero GRADE: B-
Peguero batted .196 with 3 Doubles, 2 Triples, 6 Home Runs and 19 RBI’s in 46 games for the Mariners. In the minors, he hit .317 with 15 Doubles, 2 Triples, 13 Home Runs and 47 RBI’s in 57 games for Triple-A Tacoma.

#12 Taijuan Walker GRADE: A
Walker went 6-5 with a 2.89ERA for Low-A Clinton. He walked 39 times and struck out 113 times in 96.2 innings. Opposing batters hit just .202 against Walker on the season.

#13 Greg Halman GRADE: C+
Halman batted .299 with 14 Doubles, 1 Triple, 3 Home Runs and 15 RBI’s for Triple-A Tacoma. He walked 13 times and struck out 53 times in 40 games. With the Mariners, Halman hit .230 with 2 Doubles, 1 Triple, 2 Home Runs and 6RBI’s in 35 big league games.

#14 Brandol Perez GRADE: DID NOT PLAY
Perez did not play in 2011.

#15 Dennis Raben GRADE: A
Raben hit .330 with 23 Doubles, 3 Triples, 18 Home Runs and 75 RBI’s for High-A High Desert. He walked 28 times and struck out 76 times in 76 games. His season ended in late June with a knee injury that kept him sidelined for the remainder of the season. Raben’s grade reflects his work prior to the season ending injury.

Belt batted .225 with 6 Doubles, 1 Triple, 9 Home Runs and 18 RBI’s with the Giants. He walked 20 times and struck out 57 times in 63 big league games. In the minors Belt batted a combined .320 with 13 Doubles, 8 Home Runs and 36 RBI’s in four games with the High-A San Jose Giants and 49 games with the Triple-A Fresno Grizzlies.

#2 Zack Wheeler TRADED TO NEW YORK METS
Wheeler was traded to the New York Mets in the Carlos Beltran deal. Wheeler went a combined 9-7 with a 3.52ERA between High-A San Jose and the New York’s High-A St. Lucie Mets affiliate.

#3 Gary Brown GRADE: A+
Brown hit .336 with 34 Doubles, 13 Triples, 14 Home Runs and 80 RBI’s for High-A San Jose. He also added 53 stolen bases. Brown walked 46 times and struck out 77 times in 131 games.

#4 Thomas Neal TRADED TO CLEVELAND
Neal was traded to the Cleveland Indians in the Orlando Cabrera deal. He batted a combined .289 with 14 Doubles, 3 Triples, 2 Home Runs and 26 RBI’s between Triple-A Fresno and the Indians Triple-A Columbus Clippers affiliate.

#5 Francisco Peguero GRADE: B+
Peguero batted a combined .312 with 14 Doubles, 6 Triples, 7 Home Runs and 46 RBI’s between High-A San Jose and the Double-A Richmond Flying Squirrels. He walked 12 times and struck out 53 times in 87 games.

#6 Eric Surkamp GRADE: A
Surkamp went a combined 11-4 with a 1.94ERA between one start at High-A San Jose and 22 at Double-A Richmond. He walked 45 batters and struck out 170 in 148.1 innings. Opposing batters hit .212 off of Surkamp. In six late season starts with San Francisco, Surkamp was 2-2 with a 5.74ERA.

#7 Jarrett Parker GRADE: B-
Parker batted .253 with 25 Doubles, 3 Triples, 13 Home Runs, 61 RBI’s for High-A San Jose. He walked 74 times and struck out 144 times in 127 games. Parker added 20 stolen bases.

#8 Chuckie Jones GRADE: C-
Jones batted .218 with 6 Doubles, 2 Home Runs and 9 RBI’s for the Short-A Salem Keizer Volcanoes. He walked 15 times and struck out 48 times in 41 games.

#9 Jorge Bucardo GRADE: DID NOT PLAY
Bucardo missed all of 2011 with an arm injury.

#10 Rafael Rodriguez GRADE: C
Rodriguez batted .236 with 15 Doubles, 2 Triples, 1 Home Run and 30 RBI’s for the Low-A Augusta GreenJackets. He walked 24 times and stuck out 69 times in 96 games.

#11 Michael Main GRADE: D
Main went 2-4 with a 6.84ERA for High-A San Jose. He walked 36 and struck out 46 in 52.2 innings. Opposing hitters batted .295 against Main on the season.

#12 Ehire Adrianza GRADE: B
Adrianza batted a combined .273 with 34 Doubles, 4 Triples, 6 Home Runs and 44 RBI’s between Low-A Augusta and High-A San Jose. He walked 41 times and struck out 78 times in 94 games.

#13 Chris Dominguez GRADE: B-
Dominguez batted a combined .266 with 32 Doubles, 3 Triples, 18 Home Runs and 85 RBI’s between High-A San Jose and Double-A Richmond. He walked 27 times and struck out 151 times in 141 games. Dominguez batted nearly 50 points less in Double-A than he did in Single-A.
