College baseball and rain delays generally go hand in hand during the Spring and what better way to pass the time than jousting. Division III Northland College and the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) did just that to the pretty hysterical results you will see below.
The members of the Ball State University baseball team perform their own rendition of the song “Do They Know It’s Christmas”. As you will see some of the guys might be better ballplayers than singers but all in all its a pretty great idea for spreading a little holiday cheer.
This is pretty cool. As many know, Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn is the head baseball coach at San Diego State University. Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg is one of the many who has played under Gwynn at SDSU. The latest crop of Aztecs players participated in a Halloween scrimmage over the weekend in which each player got to play in their costumes in front of a good sized crowd of fans. In the middle of what would end up being a 47-16 season that culminated in a trip to the College World Series, the Cal State Fullerton baseball team participated in Mustache March. Each player grew a mustache as a sign of team unity. They all kept it, except for Josh Fellhauer who shaved his. He gets a lot of grief for that move in this video which features many of the Fullerton baseball players on a team that included current prospects Gary Brown, Christian Colon, Jared Clark, Khris Davis, Nick Ramirez, and Noe Ramirez among others. It’s a fun watch.
A pair of Cuban Americans and University of Pennsylvania baseball players, Derek Vigoa and Adrian Lorenzo, have started an organization called Go To Bat For Cuba which is collecting bats and other baseball equipment to donate to youth players in Cuba. In the story link below, Lorenzo talks about how the plan originated, and the challenges they are facing in actually bringing the donated equipment to Cuba due to the current embargo and Cuban customs. Here is a heartwarming story for you, University of San Francisco head baseball coach Nino Giarratano donated a kidney to his 80 year old father Mickey following the 2011 baseball season which saw the Dons reach the NCAA Tournament. East Mississippi Community College in Scooba, Mississippi just made the assistant coach hire of the year, coaxing former National Coach Of The Year and three time College World Series participating coach Jim Wells out of retirement. The long time Alabama Crimson Tide skipper will the EMCC staff this spring. The Harwich Mariners swept the best two out of three Cape Cod League championship series winning the 2011 Championship over the Falmouth Commodores. In the video North Carolina State pitcher Chris Overman gets Alex Swim of Elon to pop up for the final out. As soon as the catcher makes the play, the celebration ensues for Harwich. Falmouth had made a cinderella run through the playoffs after finishing 19-25 and losing 7 of their final 10 games in the regular season. The Cape Cod League is the premiere college summer league in the country and was the backdrop for the story line in the Jessica Biel movie Summer Catch
