Mitchell & Ness The origin of the New York Knickerbockers can be traced back to 1946 with the formation of the Basketball Association of America; a merger with the National Basketball League in 1949 would result in the NBA. Throughout their long and storied history the Knicks have reached the NBA Finals eight times but have only left as champions twice. The Knicks won their second and most current title in 1973. The Knicks reached the Finals to face the Los Angeles Lakers after defeating a Celtics team that finished the year with the best record in the NBA. In the Finals, the Knicks were led by Willis Reed. The powerful presence of Reed shut down a Lakers offense that featured the legendary Wilt Chamberlain. Reed was named the MVP of the Finals as the Knicks won in five games.
