Prospect of the Day
Kurt Mertins
Kurt Mertins, the Kansas City Royals 13th round pick in the 2006 draft had a solid pro debut in 2006. The second baseman was selected by KC out of the College of the Desert in California. Assigned to rookie league Idaho Falls, Mertins batted .342 with 1 homerun, 11 doubles, 26 rbi's, and 26 stolen bases in 61 Pioneer League games. Expect Mertins, who will turn 21 in April, to begin 2007 at Low-A Burlington.

Prospect of the Day
Steven Jackson
Newly acquired New York Yankees pitching prospect Steven Jackson is coming off the best season of his career. The 6'5" right-hander was originally signed by the Arizona Diamonbacks in the 10th round of the 2004 draft out of Clemson. The Yankees picked him up a few weeks ago as part of the Randy Johnson deal. While Jackson has yet to be a dominating pitcher, he has shown signs of improvement during his three years as a pro. He skipped High-A after pitching all of 2005 at Low-A South Bend posting a 10-5 record with a 5.33 ERA and 89 strikeouts in 158.2 innings. In 2006 Jackson started the entire season at Double-A Tennessee where he went 8-11 with a 2.65 ERA and a career high 125 strikeouts in 149.2 innings pitched. Expect the 25 year old to begin 2007 at Triple-A Scranton and possibly make a spot start sometime during the season for the Yankees.

Prospect of the Day
Felix Pie
Just a few years ago Chicago Cubs outfield prospect Felix Pie was among baseball highest rated prospects. While he is no longer labeled as a can't miss player, Pie is on the brink of beginning his major league career and having the chance to prove his value at the big league level. The left handed hitting Dominican native was originally signed by the Cubs as a free agent back in 2001. He began his pro career by batting .321 as a 17 year old in the Arizona Rookie League back in 2002. Since then, Pie has advanced a level each season, and developed more power at each stop. In 2006 at Triple-A Iowa, Pie batted a career low .283 but had career highs in homeruns (15), doubles (33), and rbi's (57). He also posted career highs in walks (46) and strikeouts (46). Expect Pie to be the Cubs opening day starter in one of the outfield positions. He's been a center fielder throughout his minor league career, however where Alfonso Soriano ends up, will likely determine Pie's big league position.

Prospect of the Day
Anthony Swarzak
While fellow prospects Matt Garza and Kevin Slowey get much of the press, Minnesota Twins pitching prospect Anthony Swarzak is quietly building a very impressive resume of his own. The team's second round pick back in 2004 out of a Florida high school has been very solid since turning pro. In 2005, Swarzak combined to go 12-9 with a 3.89 ERA and 156 strikeouts in a season split between Low-A Beloit and High-A Fort Myers. Last year in a full season at Ft. Myers, Swarzak went 11-7 with a 3.27 ERA and a Florida State League leading 131 strikeouts in 145.2 innings of work. Expect Swarzak who turned 21 in September, to spend much of 2007 at Double-A New Britain and likely compete for a spot along side Garza and Slowey in the Twins rotation in 2008.

Prospect of the Day
Ryan Doherty
For possibly the first time in his career, Randy Johnson is going to have some looking up to do when he arrives at spring training. That is because he will likely meet Diamondbacks pitching giant Ryan Doherty. At 7'1" tall, Doherty will surpass both Johnson and Chicago White Sox pitcher Jon Rauch as the tallest player in baseball history should he make it to the majors. While his big league debut is likely a few years down the road, should he stay healthy, the New Jersey native certainly made a splash in his first full season as a pro. Doherty, who turns 23 in February posted a 9-1 record with 5 saves while striking out 76 batters in 62.2 innings of work out of the bullpen for South Bend. He held Midwest League hitters to a .214 batting average, and allowed just two homeruns. The Diamondbacks signed Doherty following his solid college career at Notre Dame where he went 8-4 with 20 saves and a career ERA under 3.00. Expect Doherty to begin 2007 at High-A Visalia.

Prospect of the Day
Adam Miller
After losing much of the 2005 season due to elbow problems, Cleveland Indians pitching prospect Adam Miller had much to prove in 2006. The Tribe's first round pick back in 2003 has long been thought of as one of the organization's top prospects. Finally healthy, Miller proved worthy of his lofty expectations going 15-6 with an Eastern League runner-up 2.75 ERA and 157 strikeouts which was good for third in the league. The 22 year righthander finished his 2006 season on a tear going 8-1 with a 0.97 ERA over his final 10 starts. Expect Miller, who just turned 22, to get a little bit of seasoning at Triple-A Buffalo in 2007 before making his big league debut late in the year.

Prospect of the Day
Danny Dorn
For Cincinnati Reds outfield prospect Danny Dorn, an extra year of college did not help his draft stock. Selected by the Devil Rays in the 25th round of the 2005 draft after batting .272 with 10 homeruns as a junior at Cal State Fullerton, Dorn chose to return for his senior season. Despite batting a career high .357 as a senior, Dorn's power numbers slipped, and so did his draft position, as he fell all the way to the 32nd round where the Reds snagged him with the 954th pick of the draft. In his first taste of pro ball, Dorn had arguably the best overall numbers in the Pioneer League. In 60 games he batted a league leading .354, with 8 homeruns, 17 doubles, and 40 rbi's for Billings. Expect the left handed hitting 22 year old to begin 2007 at Low-A Dayton.

Prospect of the Day
Isaias Garcia
The St. Louis Cardinals could not have expected much when they drafted Isaias Garcia in the 34th round of the 2006 draft out of Sam Houston State. However based upon his pro debut, Garcia is looking like one of the draft's top late round steals. The 22 year old second baseman led the Appalachian League in hitting in his first taste of professional baseball. At Johnson City, Garcia batted .339 with 4 homeruns, 17 doubles, and 25 rbi's. Most impressive was that he struck out just 13 times in 192 at-bats on the year. Expect Garcia, who was the Southland Conference's Newcomer of the Year in 2005 after coming to SHSU from Blinn College, to begin 2007 at Low-A Quad Cities and likely be in line for a promotion to High-A Palm Beach with early success.

Prospect of the Day
Adrian Cardenas
A high school teammate of Washington Nationals first round pick Chris Marrero, Adrian Cardenas ended up stealing the show from Marrero who was at the time considered by many to be among the top high school hitters in the 2006 draft class. Cardenas took advantage of the throngs of scouts flocking to see Marrero by putting on a show of his own. During his senior year, the left handed hitting shortstop batted .647 with 18 homeruns and 65 RBI's, earning Gatorade Player of the Year status in the state of Florida. The Philadelphia Phillies rewarded Cardenas by selecting him with the 37th overall pick in the 2006 draft. Cardenas' pro debut came soon their after with the GCL Phillies. In 41 games, he batted a Gulf Coast League runner up .318 average with 2 homeruns and 21 rbi's in his first taste of professional baseball. Expect the 19 year old Cardenas, who also has high level international experience playing for the USA Junior National Team in 2005, to play all of 2007 at Low-A Lakewood.
