Video: Phillies Low-A Manager Mickey Mornadini Gets Ejected

Who wasn’t a fan of Mickey Morandini back in the day. He turned an unassisted triple play with the Phillies, he had an awesome looking rookie card, and was even an All Star back in 1995. These days he is managing the Phillies Low-A Lakewood Blueclaws team in New Jersey. Earlier this week he produced one of the more animated minor league managerial ejections of the year. Not sure what set him off as the video picks up mid argument. Check out the video from the folks at the Phillies blog PhoulBallz.com.

Ryne Sandberg Still Waiting For Chance To Manage In The Major Leagues While Others With No Experience Get Theirs

Poor Ryne Sandberg (KEY ROOKIE: 1983 Topps), the guy has the dream of being a major league manager, he’s toiled through the minor leagues, successfully, four winning seasons in five years and Baseball America’s 2011 Minor League Manager of the Year Award, and yet the guy still can’t catch a break. Meanwhile Robin Ventura and Mike Matheny, two men with no managerial experience at any level, and lacking Sandberg’s Hall of Fame credentials are ready to embark on their careers as big league skippers, as Sandberg is set to begin his second season as manager of the Philadelphia Phillies Triple-A Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs affiliate. In the story link below, Sandberg talks about being back in the minors once again, and hirings of Ventura and Matheny. Additionally Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr shares his thoughts on Sandberg as does Cubs infielder Darwin Barney who played three seasons for Sandberg in the Cubs organization. It’s a very good read.

Q&A With Philadelphia Phillies Prospect Jiwan James

By: Andrew Martin
@RedSoxFanNum1
BaseballHistorian.Blogspot.com

Major league teams love athletic players because of the versatility and potential they possess. Jiwan James, a rising outfield prospect in the Philadelphia Phillies’ minor league system, fits that bill. He was taken out of high school in the 22nd round in the 2007 draft as a pitcher, although many believed that he was going to forego baseball altogether and play college football. James ended up signing with the Phillies, and in 2009 was converted to an outfielder.

James adapted to being a position player quickly, hitting .268 since the conversion. His most advanced tool at this point is his speed, as evidenced by the 33 stolen bases he had last year and the 31 he had this season. He is also considered a dominant defensive outfielder. James has never hit more than 5 home runs in any season during his career, but he has the size (6’4, 180) and athletic talent to do just about anything he wants on the baseball diamond.

With the aging Raul Ibanez set to become a free agent, it is possible that James could be fast-tracked to the majors. I recently exchanged emails with James, and hope that you enjoy learning a little more about this Phillies’ prospect.

How did you first become interested in baseball?
It was the first sport I played, at like age 5 I think.

How did you first find out that the Phillies were interested in you?
I really don’t remember. All of the questionnaires started coming in around the same time, during my senior year. I did talk to the Phillies more than anyone else leading up to the draft though, so that’s probably when I figured it would be them.

You dropped a little in the draft because most teams thought you were going to the University of Florida. What made you change your mind and sign?
The pros and cons of signing and not signing, sitting down with the family to talk about it, and the change in the (Florida) coaching staff.

Who was your favorite team and player growing up?
Yankees and Derek Jeter.

What is the attention and scrutiny like, being a top prospect for Philadelphia?
I really don’t pay too much attention to it. I’m more into having fun playing the game and enjoying my teammates first.

You were drafted as a pitcher… do you miss pitching?
Not at all. I’m having too much fun playing every day.

What has been your favorite moment in your professional playing career thus far?
Winning the South Atlantic League Championship last season. That was the most fun I’ve had yet playing baseball, from the start of the season until the end.

What is your thought process/mind set like right now as you get closer to the major leagues?
The closer I get, the harder I work.

VIDEO: Very Upset Six Year Old Fan Doesn’t Think The Cardinals Tried Hard Against The Phillies On Tuesday

This six year old St Louis Cardinals fan is very upset about the team’s loss to the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 3 of the NLDS on Tuesday. The mother tries to console him by telling him that “They will win the next one maybe”, and the kid responds “No they won’t cause they are not trying”. After watching them leave 14 on base last night, I have a hard time disagreeing with the kid. The video is classic. Enjoy.

Phillies Michael Martinez Went From Pro Basketball To Police Work To The Big Leagues

There have been a number of strange journeys to the big leagues recently, like John Axford’s journey from cell phone salesman to big league closer, or Mariners rookie Steve Delabar’s six month journey from school teacher to big league pitcher. The Phillies have their own unlikely major leaguer in the form of utility player Michael Martinez. He went from a short lived professional basketball career, to being a police officer in his Dominican Republic hometown before being discovered with little more than the local police league keeping him active. Now he is on the Phillies team that just got through winning 102 games in the 2011 regular season. In the outstanding story below, from Geoff Morrow who you can follow on twitter @patriotnews_gmo, the amazing story of Martinez’ path to the majors is told by those who were a part of making it happen and the player himself.
