2012 Houston Astros Top 15 Prospect Rankings

Every year at this time I like to rank each team’s top prospects. My criteria is based upon both past performance and future potential to his parent team. To qualify, a prospect must have fewer than 130 at-bats or 50 innings in MLB

2011 Philadelphia Phillies Top 15 Prospects Post Season Report Card

With the 2011 minor league season complete we check in on the progress of each of the Philadelphia Phillies preseason Top 15 prospects as ranked by our prospect ranker J.P. Schwartz. The post season grading report was done by the publisher of Top Prospect Alert, not Mr. Schwartz, and reflects only the 2011 season and not future upside or downside of the individual prospect. Our 2012 preseason rankings will be published in the coming months.

#1 Domonic Brown GRADE: C+
Brown batted .245 with 10 Doubles, 1 Triple, 5 Home Runs and 19 RBI’s in 56 games with the Phillies. He walked 25 times and struck out 35 times. In the minors Brown hit a combined .274 with 7 Doubles, 5 Home Runs and 19 RBI’s five games with the High-A Clearwater Threshers and 41 with the Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

#2 Jonathan Singleton TRADED TO HOUSTON
Singleton was traded to the Astros as part of the Hunter Pence deal. Singleton batted a combined .298 with 23 Doubles, 1 Triple, 13 Home Runs and 63 RBI’s between Clearwater and the Astros’ High-A Lancaster Jethawks.

#3 Brody Colvin GRADE: C
Colvin went 3-8 with a 4.71ERA for High-A Clearwater. He walked 42 and struck out 78 in 116.2 innings of work. Opposing batters hit .289 off Colvin on the season.

#4 Jarred Cosart TRADED TO HOUSTON
Cosart was traded to the Astros as part of the Hunter Pence trade. Cosart went a combined 10-10 with a 4.12ERA between High-A Clearwater and the Astros’ Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks.

#5 Trevor May GRADE: A
May went 10-8 with a 3.63ERA for High-A Clearwater. He walked 67 and struck out 208 in 151.1 innings. Opposing batters hit just .221 off May on the season.

#6 Jesse Biddle GRADE: A-
Biddle went 7-8 with a 2.98ERA for the Low-A Lakewood BlueClaws. He walked 66 and struck out 124 in 133 innings. Opposing batters hit .219 off of Biddle on the season.

#7 Cameron Rupp GRADE: B-
Rupp batted .272 with 19 Doubles, 1 Triple, 4 Home Runs and 44 RBI’s for Low-A Lakewood. He walked 31 times and struck out 96 times in 99 games.

#8 Domingo Santana TRADED TO HOUSTON
Santana was the player to be named later in the Hunter Pence trade. He batted a combined .287 with 33 Doubles, 4 Triples, 12 Home Runs and 53 RBI’s between Low-A Lakewood and the Astros’ Low-A Lexington Legends.

#9 Jiwan James GRADE: B-
James batted .268 with 26 Doubles, 6 Triples, 4 Home Runs and 38 RBI’s for High-A Clearwater. He also stole 31 bases. James walked 40 times and struck out 120 times in 130 games.

#10 Nick Hernandez GRADE: DID NOT PLAY
Hernandez missed all of the 2011 season following shoulder surgery.

#11 Eric Pettis GRADE: B
Pettis went a combined 2-3 with a 2.84ERA and 5 Saves between Low-A Lakewood and High-A Clearwater. He walked 16 and struck out 55 in 69.2 innings. Opposing batters hit .230 off Pettis.

#12 Gauntlett Eldemire DID NOT PLAY
Missed the entire 2011 season due to a wrist injury.

#13 Aaron Altherr GRADE: C
Altherr batted a combined .243 with 18 Doubles, 2 Triples, 6 Home Runs, and 46 RBI’s between the Short-A Williamsport Crosscutters and Low-A Lakewood. He also stole 37 bases. Altherr walked 24 times and struck out 99 times in 112 games.

#14 Perci Garner GRADE: B+
Garner went 1-1 with a 1.20ERA for Short-A Williamsport. He walked 9 and struck out 30 in 30 innings. Opposing batters hit .252 off of Garner on the season.

#15 Phillippe Aumont GRADE: A-
Aumont went 2-5 with a 2.68ERA and 7 saves between the Double-A Reading Phillies and Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He walked 25 and struck out 78 in 53.2 innings. Opposing batters hit just .216 off of Aumont on the season.

Prospect Breakdown: Houston Astros Trade Hunter Pence To Phillies For Jonathan Singleton & Jarred Cosart

The Houston Astros have acquired Philadelphia Phillies prospects Jonathan Singleton and Jarred Cosart as well as Josh Zeid and a player to be named later via trade in exchange for Hunter Pence. The 19 year old Singleton is the Phillies top overall prospect. This season for the High-A Clearwater Threshers Singleton is batting .282 with 14 Doubles, 9 Home Runs and 47 RBI. Last year for the Low-A Lakewood Blueclaws the 6’2″ left handed hitting outfielder batted .290 with 25 Doubles, 2 Triples, 14 Home Runs, and 77RBI. Singleton was an 8th round pick in the 2009 draft out of Millikan High School in California. Cosart is arguably the top young arm in a Phillies organization loaded with them. The 20 year old is currently 9-8 with a 3.92ERA for High-A Clearwater. He’s struck out 79 batters in 108 innings of work and opposing hitters are batting .243 off of Cosart. The right hander went 7-3 with a 3.79 ERA in 71 innings for Lakewood in 2010. Cosart was originally a 38th round pick of the Phillies in the 2008 draft out of Clear Creek High School in Texas. Zeid is a 24 year old relief pitcher currently playing for Double-A Reading where he is 2-3 with a 5.65ERA. After 11 starts, Zeid was moved to the bullpen where he has picked up two saves, and has an ERA of 2.25 in his 10 relief appearances. Zeid went 8-4 with a 2.83ERA for Lakewood in 2010. He was a 10th round pick of the Phillies in the 2009 draft out of Tulane.
