Phil Gosselin is probably best known for cranking a Home Run off the then unbeaten Stephen Strasburg that helped the Virginia Cavaliers beat San Diego State in the 2009 NCAA Regional. However now that he’s turned pro, Gosselin is beginning to makie a name for himself in the Carolina League as the second baseman is one of the batter hitters on the Lynchburg Hillcats. The Atlanta Braves farmhand is batting .272 with 22 doubles, five triples, five home runs, and 51 RBI’s so far this season. In the story below, Gosselin talks about staying focused in his first full season, playing close to home in Lynchburg, getting to see his Virginia Cavaliers make it to the NCAA’s once again, and playing minor league ball for Luis Salazar who lost his eye after being hit with a line drive during spring training.
It’s been four years to the day since tragedy struck Minor League Baseball when Tulsa Drillers coach Mike Coolbaugh was struck with a line drive and killed while coaching first base during the Drillers game at Arkansas. Coolbaugh’s brother Scott is now the Texas Rangers’ hitting coach. In the story Scott talks about his brothers memory, forming the Diamond Dreams foundation, and how tough it was not to be able to call his brother and tell him he was headed to the big leagues.
Remember Brian, the fan who had Bryce Harper sign his grandfather’s Mickey Mantle Autographed Baseball? Well he’s back. This time documenting his trip to Cooperstown New York for the Major League Baseball 2011 Hall Of Fame Induction. He catches up with Pete Rose at a local restaurant and asks for his autograph on a previously unsigned baseball upon Rose’s departure. Rose does not sign, and Brian responds by throwing the ball into the woods over oncoming traffic.
This is not a bad deal. MLB.com shop is running a deal for One Dozen Rawlings ROMLB Official Major League Baseballs with cubes for $159.99. This is a discount from the normal price of $179.99. When you factor in the $1.50 value of the ball cube, it brings the baseballs themselves to just under $12 per ball. You can also use a MLB.com code (All Caps) MLBINSIDE10 for 15% off any non-sale item at the MLB.com Store by entering the coupon code at checkout.
When a Ray Durham autographed baseball turns up sitting on a shelf where a baseball signed by a Hall of Famer used to sit, something fishy may be going on. So was the thought of Benjamin Pogofsky who found the Durham ball sitting among bits and pieces of what was once his late father, former Chicago White Sox executive, Larry Pogofsky’s prized autographed baseball collection. The interesting story below outlines the series of events that subsequently led to Pogofsky’s brother being charged with felony theft and burglary in the case of the missing baseballs estimated to be worth upwards of $10,000.
Seth Stohs who runs the outstanding Minnesota Twins blog SethSpeaks.net and is a must follow on twitter @SethTweets recently spent a weekend behind the scenes with the Twins Class-A affiliate the Beloit Snappers. It’s been a homecoming of sorts for Texas Rangers catcher Taylor Teagarden. When the Rangers switched Triple-A affiliates moving from Oklahoma City to Round Rock, it meant that Teagarden, who has been up and down with the franchise since his major league debut in 2008, would be playing minutes from Austin, where he spent his college days. Teagarden caught the final out of the Texas Longhorns 2005 College World Series championship. In the story, Teagarden talks about his return to the Austin area, and the support that he still receives from Longhorns fans.
The Huntsville Stars the Double-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers and Jerry Damson Honda are running their second annual Car Survivor contest. On July 20th during the Stars game against the Chattanooga Lookouts, five fans entered the 2007 Honda Accord parked outside the main gate at Joe Davis Stadium. When they leave is up to them. By rule they get a 15 minute break every 6 hours. So that means 23 of their 24 hours each day will be spent in the vehicle. The last one out wins the car. Last year’s contest went eight days before the final contestant folded. There is no air conditioning in the vehicle so they will only have the luxury of having the windows rolled down to circulate air. The five day forecast in Huntsville shows high of at least 87 degrees for the next five days with a couple of days over 90. I have posted the contestants into videos below.
