Top Prospect
Alert Corey Myers, 3B - D-Backs
Corey Myers: The fourth pick overall
pick in the 1999 draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks, Myers looked like a
pretty large reach to go so high and his play in 2000 has done basically
nothing to change many people's view. Some of the struggles might be due
to him converting from shortstop over to third base this
spring.
Once signed, Myers received a $2 million signing bonus and
was assigned to Rookle-level Missoula. He helped in calming down the
overrated talks by batting .276 with five homers and 44 runs batted in in
272 at-bats.
However, he this season has bee a struggle for this
19-year-old. In the spring he was converted over to third and was assigned
to Single-A South Bend in the Midwest League. He struggled at the plate
(.125, 4 RBI in 64 AB) and committed 14 errors (in 19 games) in the field.
Myers was sent back to the Osprey and to see if he can settle homself
down, but the struggles have continued as he has batted .218 with 5 home
runs, 38 runs batted in, 14 doubles, 2 triples, 31 runs scored, 17 walks
51 strikeouts, and 4 steals in 216 at-bats.
Myers is still young so
he does have a lot of time left, but he needs to bounce back next season
and show an improvement at the plate, especially in making more contact.
If he can settle in at third and improve at the plate, maybe the D-backs
will have their eventual successor to Matt Williams. But that is a long
ways away right now.
