Top Prospect Alert Interview
Yankees Prospect Corban Joseph

Tennessee native Corban Joseph is emerging as one of the top infield prospects in the New York Yankees organization. Joseph is currently in his third season of professional baseball after being selected by the Yankees in the 4th round of the 2008 June Draft. This season Joseph is off to a fast start with the Tampa Yankees in the Florida State League. Top Prospect Alert is pleased to bring you an interview with Yankees second base prospect Corban Jospeh

TPA You were among the Sally League's best group of hitters last year despite being among the younger players in the league. How much confidence does your success last season give you heading into this year?

Corban Joseph The success from last year was an eye opener for me. I usually start off slow and come around after getting used to the pitching and seeing what pitchers are doing to try to get me out. As a whole I learned a lot in Charleston that I can take with me to other levels.

TPA What was your spring training like this year?

Corban Joseph Well this past spring training was my second year, this year I really enjoyed being able to play and get into the baseball mindset as fast as I could. I really focused on my objectives and tried to get better everyday.

TPA How much are you introduced to the "Yankee Way" from the time you enter the organization?

Corban Joseph The "Yankee way" for me was introduced quite quickly. Not only is there the hustle and playing hard mentality you have to have, my long hair didn't cut the rules, so it had to go. In the big picture its something to be proud about and to take pride in, and be a part of.

TPA Tell us about your draft day experience. Where were you when you got the call? Who did you tell first? How far in advance did you know the Yankees were thinking about taking you?

Corban Joseph Draft day was a fun experience. I was at my house with close friends watching the TV with fingers crossed hoping someone was going to take me. I got a call from my agent telling me the Yankees were wanting me in the fourth round. I was extremely excited but knew there was a lot of work ahead, but the experience was fun! The Yankees talked to me, telling me they were interested, but so were a lot of others like, the White Sox, Red Sox, and Twins, so I had a good idea that someone would pick me up at some point.

TPA Prior to being drafted you had committed to Kentucky. What was the decision process like for you, and how tough of a decision was it to eventually sign with the Yankees? Do you eventually plan on working towards a degree?

Corban Joseph School, at the time, wasn't my dream. I wanted to be a pro baseball player. I had dedicated many hours towards my goals and if I got the choice I would definitely play pro ball. Getting a degree is something I want to complete as well, after my career is over. But for now its all baseball.

TPA How often are you able to keep in touch with your brother Caleb as he makes his way through the Orioles system?

Corban Joseph We talk every now and then checking up on each other and seeing how we are doing as a whole. Its good to have someone who knows you, knows your swing and is able to talk about issues with when we are in a slump. He also tells me what i get to look forward to when I get to a certain place.

TPA Topps recently produced your first baseball card. What was it like to see yourself on a card? Did you collect cards as a kid?

Corban Joseph It's always an eye opener to see yourself on a card. It seemed like yesterday I was collecting cards myself and to know have a few of me, its like wow, this is for real. It puts things into perspective for sure.

TPA Aside from your family, who are a couple of the people that have been most influential on your baseball career thus far and what advice have they given you?

Corban Joseph The list could go on for days, I have had a lot of people who have got me to where I am today from my high school coaches Brent Alumbaugh, Kurt Jones, and Jeremy Brown to Steve Ashcraft to Tony at Showtime. I have been blessed with people taking me in and supporting me in my dreams. It is a true blessing.

TPA What has been your best memory so far as a pro, both from a playing standpoint as well as from something that's happend while on the road in the minors?

Corban Joseph I think my best memory I will always remember is playing with A-Rod. He was in extended last year for a few weeks, and it really made me step my game up personally to stride for perfection and be the best I can be everyday. I also enjoyed traveling to Dominican Republic to play for a few weeks, and seeing the poverty down there, also was a blessing.
