Negro League legend and Baseball Hall Of Famer Pete Hill may or may not have been born in Culpeper County Virginia. After much debate as to whether or not Hill had been born in the county, the Culpeper County Board of Supervisors voted to fund half the cost of a plaque to honor Hill at their Culpeper Community Sports Complex. Willie “Curly” Williams a one time star in the Negro Leagues had died at age 86. Williams was an infielder for the Newark Eagles, Houston Eagles, and the New Orleans Eagles in the Negro Leagues in the late 40’s and early 50’s before a brief stint in the Chicago White Sox organization and a near decade long run playing baseball in Canada. Jeremy Krock of Peoria Illinois launched the Negro Leagues Baseball Grave Marking Project 2003 and in the eight years since Krock has spent countless hours tracking down and adding headstones to the unmarked graves of former Negro League players. In the fascinating story, Krock talks about getting started on his project based on his interest in former Negro Leaguer Jimmie Cruchfield, the detective work he goes through to track down new gravesites, and the financial support he has received from some of the biggest names in Major League Baseball.

The South Bend Silver Hawks are honoring five former Negro League players at their upcoming game on Monday July 25th against the Kane County Cougars. Among them are 89 year old Hank “Baby” Presswood and Lou “The Grey Cat” Clarizio who was the first white player to ever play in the Negro Leagues as a member of the Chicago American Giants. In the story Clarizio talks about being accepted by his teammates and coaches, but finding it much tougher to win over the fans. Presswood also looks back on his career with the Cleveland Buckeyes and the Kansas City Monarchs. It’s a fascinating story on both players.
