Angel Berroa: With the Athletics major league
club being set at shortstop for years with Miguel Tejada, and the system
still having the like of Freddie Bynum in the low minors, the organization
was able to part with the like of Berroa when basically all other teams
would have someone of his talent labeled as "their shortstop of the
future." The Royals are now lucky owners of this promising
player.
At 6-foot and 175 pounds, this 20-year-old has been one of
the best players that the A's have had in the low minors over the last
couple of seasons. He spent 2000 at Single-A Visalia, posting a .277
average, 10 home runs, 63 runs batted in, 25 doubles, 6 triples, 61 runs
scored, 30 walks, 70 strikeouts, and 11 steals in 429 at-bats. Even with
the low walk number, for someone his age, Berroa has done well at putting
the ball in play, has shown good speed, and finally a bat that could
produce double digit homers consistently. His worst number last year was a
huge error total (54), but Berroa might end up better in the field than at
the plate. He has the range and arm to make all the plays and more that
you would want from that position. Like most young shortstops, he just
needs to learn when to hold onto the ball instead of trying to get the out
on every ball hit at him.
Berroa was blocked by both Tejada and
Ortiz set to be starters for years in the Oakland infield so getting moved
to a team K.C. should give him that chance to compete to be an everyday
starter in a couple of years. Right now, I feel that Berroa has a higher
upside than anyone currently playing shortstop for the Royals, either at
the major or minor league level.
