Prospect of the Day
Eric Campbell
Since being drafted by the Atlanta Braves out of an Indiana high school back in 2004, Eric Campbell has done nothing but hit. The second round pick is beginning to establish himself as potential future star. Campbell, a third baseman, had an insane 2005 season batting .313 with 18 homeruns, 26 doubles, and 64 rbi's in just 66 games at Rookie League Danville. He followed up with another great year in 2006 at Low-A Rome. Campbell batted .296 with 22 homeruns, 77 rbi's, and 18 stolen bases in 116 games. Expect Campbell, who turned 22 in August, to begin 2007 at High-A Myrtle Beach, and likely debut at Double-A Mississippi before season's end.

Prospect of the Day
Jordan Brown
The Cleveland Indians seem to have picked up a 2005 draft fourth round gem in the person of Jordan Brown. A three year letter winner at Arizona, Brown is beginning to make his mark on professional baseball. The 23 year old outfielder took home Carolina League MVP honors while leading Kinston into the playoffs in 2006. On the season Brown batted .290 with 15 homeruns and 87 rbi's in 125 games for the K-Tribe. One of the nice things about Brown in addition to his developing power, is his plate discipline. He has struck out just 66 times while picking up 54 walks in 548 pro at-bats. Look for Brown to begin 2007 at Double-A Akron and likely have the chance to earn a late promotion to Triple-A Buffalo with a solid season.

Prospect of the Day
Joaquin Arias
Joaquin Arias was the player to be named later in the Alex Rodriguez for Alfonso Soriano blockbuster between the New York Yankees & Texas Rangers back in 2004. Soriano of course is long gone, but Arias is poised to make his mark in Arlington. Since joining the Rangers organization, the Dominican native has been putting together a solid minor league career. Arias had an insane spring training in 2005 going 8 for 9 in big league camp. He then batted .315 with 5 homeruns, 56 rbi's and 20 stolen bases for Double-A Frisco that same year. He followed with in 2006 by batting .268 with 4 homeruns, 49 rbi's and 26 stolen bases at Triple-A Oklahoma City. While he's not a traditional power guy, Arias just turned 22 and still has the ability to develop into a 10 to 15 homerun per year player. He's a fairly solid gap hitter, and has never struck out more than 65 times in a season. The Rangers rewarded Arias with a call up to the majors last year and he responded by collecting six hits including a triple in 11 big league at-bats. Look for Arias to have a chance to make the Rangers lineup out of spring training and either way he should spend a fairly large portion of the year in Texas.

Prospect of the Day
Cody Ehlers
Cody Ehlers will turn 25 a couple of weeks in to the 2007 season, putting himself on the fringe of prospect consideration. However it's pretty hard to ignore the offensive output that Ehlers had in 2006 at High-A Tampa. The Oklahoma native was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 11th round out of the University of Missouri. During his senior year with the Tigers, Ehlers batted .364 and blasted 18 homeruns. After struggling in his first two professional seasons, Ehlers went off last year. He batted .298 with 18 homeruns and a Florida State League leading 106 rbi's. Ehlers also led the league with 38 doubles and finished fifth with 64 walks on the year. Expect the left handed hitting first baseman to begin 2007 with Double-A Trenton and have the chance to play his way into being part of the Yankees midseason trade talks should he post another solid campaign.

Prospect of the Day
Matt Gamel
Matt Gamel was a fourth round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers back in 2005. Not quite as highly regarded as fellow third base draftee Ryan Braun, Gamel has still put up some nice numbers as a pro. Playing much of the season as a 20 year old, Gamel spent all of 2006 at Low-A West Virginia. In 129 games, Gamel batted .288 with 17 homeruns and 88 rbi's. He also improved his plate discipline striking out just 81 times in 493 at-bats while drawing 52 walks during the season. Expect Gamel to begin and spend much of 2007 at High-A Brevard County.

Prospect of the Day
Amalio Diaz
After spending all of 2005 as a reliever on the Los Angeles Angels rookie league team, Amalio Diaz was converted to a starter in 2006 and was among the most travelled pitchers in the minors. Diaz made stops in four different cities, playing on four different teams over the course of 14 starts this past year. The Venezuela native, who just turned 20, combined to go 5-4 with a 3.78 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 78.2 innings between the Arizona League Angels, rookie league Orem Owls, Low-A Cedar Rapids, and High-A Rancho Cucamonga. Diaz began the year in the California League with his best numbers, going 3-0 with 1.52 ERA in four starts. Look for Diaz to begin 2007 back at Rancho Cucamonga and get the opportunity to showcase his skills as one of the younger, but more experienced pitchers in High-A.

Prospect of the Day
Brandon Wood
One of baseball's best power hitting prospects, Brandon Wood continued to impress in his first taste of Double-A baseball in 2006. The Los Angeles Angels drafted Wood out of an Arizona high school with the 23rd overall pick back in the 2003 June draft. After combining to hit just 16 homeruns in his first two seasons as a pro, Wood exploded for a California League 43 homeruns in 2005. He followed that up this past season with a productive year in the Texas League batting .276 with 25 homeruns, 42 doubles, and 83 rbi's while stealing 19 bases in 118 games for Arkansas. Expect Wood, who turns 22 in March, to begin 2007 at Triple-A Salt Lake, and likely bring his future All-Star stick with him to Anaheim by seasons end.

Prospect of the Day
Andy Sonnanstine
While they may have one of the worst teams in the majors, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays farm system is nothing short of loaded. Andy Sonnanstine is another in a long line of pitching prospects that hope to soon call Tampa home. Originally signed by the D-Rays as a 13th round pick in 2004 out of Kent State, Sonnanstine has breezed through the system. He has a solid 2005 campaign going a combined 14-5 with a 2.99 ERA and 178 strikeouts in 180.2 innings between Low-A Southwest Michigan and High-A Visalia. In 2006 the 23 year old was even better at Double-A Montgomery. Sonnanstine went 15-8 with a 2.67 ERA and 153 strikeouts in 185.2 innings. He held Southern League hitters to a .224 batting average on the year. Expect the 6'3" southpaw to begin 2007 at Triple-A Durham, but Sonnanstine should have a slight chance of making the big league club out of spring training. Either way expect to see Sonnanstine in a Devil Rays uniform before the end of this coming season.

Prospect of the Day
George Kontos
Despite having a career ERA over 5.00 in his three years at Northwestern, George Kontos was selected by the New York Yankees in the fifth round of the 2006 June draft. The 21 year old's junior season for the Wildcats did not go quite according to plan. Kontos went 3-10 with a 5.29 ERA and 88 strikeouts in 95.1 innings as a junior. Since turning pro, the 6'3" right hander, has put up the best numbers of his baseball career. Kontos was one of the hottest pitchers in the New York-Penn League this past summer posting a 7-3 record with a 2.64 ERA and 82 strikeouts in 78.1 innings at Staten Island. He allowed just three homeruns, and opposing batters hit just .225 against him. Look Kontos to begin 2007 at Low-A Charleston and have a chance to make it up to High-A Tampa should he have early season success.
